How to Create a Culture of Celebration, Not Competition

How to Create a Culture of Celebration, Not Competition

In nursing, the "crab mentality"—where individuals pull each other down instead of lifting each other up—can damage team morale and lead to a toxic work environment. To create a more supportive, collaborative culture, we need to shift the focus from competition to celebration.

Here are three ways to combat the crab mentality and foster a more positive atmosphere:

  1. Know Your "Why": When a healthcare professional is striving to advance their education or achieve certification, encourage them to stay focused on their personal reasons for pursuing growth. Understanding their own “why” helps deflect negativity from others who may try to hold them back.
  2. Use Scripts to Handle Crabby Behavior: Equip your team with simple, assertive scripts to address negativity head-on. Responses like, “I respect your choices and would appreciate if you respected mine,” can defuse tension and promote mutual respect.
  3. Celebrate Success: Go out of your way to recognize achievements—whether it’s a nurse passing their boards, winning an award, or simply doing a great job. Celebrating even small wins helps shift the culture to one where good work is appreciated and crabby behavior becomes abnormal.

By creating a culture of celebration over competition, we build a more supportive, respectful environment where every team member can thrive.

Renee Thompson DNP, RN, FAAN, Workplace Bullying Expert , This is such a great and insightful write up, and I think if we nurses can ponder more on this it will be a game change. Truly, cultivating a mindset and spirit of celebrating and complimenting others and not competing is a very important aspect that nurses and other health professionals must embrace if there must be; quality patient care, innovation and adaptation to the challenges that might come our way which I think it's inevitable. Nurses like any other human being , love appreciation and celebration for what and who they are. So, developing the spirit of finding worth in others is the surest way to building a culture of togetherness in diversity. People only thrive when they recognize that, they are because some people are there, not necessarily having a whole claim of independence. Be the nurse that celebrate, set boundaries, encourage and support.

Love this - when we collaborate, miracles happen.

Love this, I feel this is really good advice??. But it is pretty hard when you have 2 RNs, 1 tech, 1 lab person, Assistant Director Rn, Director of care health facility(in your area) all working against you bullying and trying to set you up for failure. Every time you look around you think that something‘s gonna happen bad because it’s not just everyone you work with. It’s even the higher-ups you work with. I’ve been there. Can’t tell you where I’ve been there. Doesn’t feel good at all. I have worked many diverse jobs. I do want to say this has been a number of years ago. I want to let everyone know I’m doing fine. I’m great today.??
