How To Create Content That Stands Out

"How am I supposed to stand out on social media?"

"Everyone else is posting and talking about the same stuff, so why should I even bother?"

Stats

  • There is about 2.5 quintillion bytes of data/content made each day.
  • Skype has 3 billion minutes of calls per day.
  • 5 billion Snapchat videos and photos are shared per day.
  • 333.2 billion?emails are sent per day.

These numbers might be daunting, BUT let us remember, not all content that is created is quality. This is where you can stand out. In the quality of your work.

How do advisors get noticed by prospects, current clients, publications, etc? Also, not only how do you stand out, how can you gain and keep people's trust? There really isn't a scientific formula, but there is one I like to share:

Content + Engagement + Consistency = Growth

Quality content, plus thoughtful engagement, done consistently, will help you grow and stand out.

A recent podcast from Michael Kitces and Carl Richards talked about this very topic. In episode 90 on their podcast, they talked about standing out on social media by finding the Minimum Viable Audience. Meaning, get really specific about what you are talking about. This is how you "capture attention, drive interest, and grow a following on social media."

What is quality content?

What "counts" as quality content? You can ask yourself this one question: "is this fluffy?"

Nike ad that reads: "yesterday you said tomorrow."?

Filling space with fluff words to meet some quota or to sound smart is not quality content. As a matter of fact, some of the best copy out there could be just a sentence. Check this out from Nike:

That is pretty straightforward and to the point.

Granted this is an ad, and not a blog, but this is proving a point. Your content needs to make people think, inspire people, get them to feel, yes, emotions is 100% acceptable in content creation.

Another thing your content needs to do, always be helpful. You are not selling, you are helping. You are providing information that someone can take to solve a problem, save time, or save/make money.

How do you create quality content?

  1. Think about your reader and write to and for them
  2. Be trustworthy
  3. Show relevancy
  4. Share statistics
  5. Help don't sell
  6. Answer questions
  7. Create content that is useful and solves problems

Not every piece of content you make will be epic each time, but when you keep in mind what readers want and need, that will help you create quality.

You stand out by cutting through the noise.

Remember: when you show that your concern is for the reader, you build trust. So cut through the noise and deliver content that is consistently helpful.

Where does that end? Like how long can you keep topping your previous authenticity and boldness? Like if I keep having to top the last post to gain an audience where does that end?

Playing it safe dulls creativity, and we all have creativity inside somewhere! Maybe break out the crayons a bit and have some fun.

There is a reason (well, many reasons...) why Elon Musk stands out on social media. He says things that some of us would be too afraid to say. We don't have to be that extreme, but you can admit, he stands out because he is not following the norm.
