How to craft a standout UN internship application

How to craft a standout UN internship application

?? Reflecting on my experience reviewing hundreds of UN internship applications, I’ve seen firsthand how crucial it is for candidates to stand out by tailoring their applications to the specific opportunity. Here’s some guidance on how to make your application shine:

?? Key Components of the UN Internship Application:

  1. Motivational Statement: Avoid generic language, writing too little, or too much; aim for a solid paragraph or two. I've found that many applicants only focus on outlining their motivation to contribute to the UN's mission. While this is great, don't make this your only focus as it doesn't set you apart from others. To make your motivational statement stand out, identify why you were drawn to this specific internship opportunity. Clearly articulate how your skills align with the role’s requirements. Show that you understand the position and can contribute meaningfully. Review the job description carefully and match your motivational statement to the skills and tasks outlined for the role.
  2. List of Experiences: While prior experience isn’t required for a UN internship, highlighting relevant experience that aligns with the internship description can be highly beneficial. Rather than just listing duties, focus on achievements that demonstrate your capabilities. Use specific examples to illustrate how your experience can add value to the team.

Further Tips:

?? Research the UN System: The UN is a vast system made up of various agencies, funds, and programs, each with its own mission and priorities. Tailor your application to the specific entity and internship. For instance, if you’re applying to OSAA, which focuses on African issues, mention why this is important to you. If you're passionate about children's rights, explore opportunities with UNICEF. Remember that the UN’s work spans multiple sectors beyond just peacekeeping and human rights but also includes administration, operations, development, and technical roles. Ensure your application reflects an understanding of the specific area you’re applying to and how your background aligns with their needs.

?? Understand the Goals of the Internship Program: UN internships are designed to give students or recent graduates their first experience in a multilateral organization. They are not intended as a direct entryway to UN employment. When crafting your application, focus on how the internship will provide you with valuable experiences and how we can contribute to your career ambition. When conducting interviews, a standard question we ask is how we can help you achieve your goals, as this is key to ensuring that the internship becomes worthwhile for both parties. We want you to take away an experience that was meaningful.

?? Common Pitfalls to Avoid:

  • Don’t use the same application for every UN internship. Each opportunity is unique, and your application should reflect that. Customize your application to the specific role and entity you’re applying to.
  • Don’t overemphasize generic UN virtues. While these are important, they are expected of all UN interns. Instead, focus on the specific skills and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the particular internship. Show how you can meet the unique challenges of the role and contribute to the team’s objectives.
  • Don't rely solely on AI: Tools like ChatGPT can help you refine and focus your application. However, pay attention to details and ensure the application still reflects your personal traits and capacities. I've seen instances where candidates have inadvertently copied over their prompt texts into applications. Also, remember that we are looking for candidates with critical thinking and reasoning skills. AI does not replace that.

?? Additional Considerations:

  • Be Specific: Whether it’s in your motivational statement or your list of experiences, specificity is key. General statements can be easily overlooked, but specific examples and tailored explanations will make your application stand out.
  • Demonstrate Cultural Awareness: The UN operates in diverse environments, so showing an understanding of different cultures or languages can be a significant advantage. If relevant, mention any international experience or language skills you possess.
  • Highlight Soft Skills: Beyond technical skills, soft skills like communication, adaptability, and teamwork are highly valued in the UN environment. Make sure to weave these into your application where relevant.
