Not Prompt Engineering But, Approaching Effective Prompts With Common Sense
Prompt engineering is the art and science of crafting prompts that guide GitHub Copilot models to produce the desired outputs. It involves understanding how the GitHub Copilot interprets and responds to different inputs and structuring these inputs to maximize the effectiveness of the its suggestions.?
Common sense plays a crucial role here—knowing what information to include and how to phrase it can significantly affect the quality of the GitHub Copilot’s responses.
We won't be learning any extraordinary way to get a grip of effective prompts but just know a more practical, realistic, and basically, commonsensical approach. This Saturday, ditch the hype and join us at Lead with Tech. We'll leave the internet's latest prompt engineering tricks behind and focus on supercharging your workflow with tricks that work for your everyday lives.
Understand the Problem with Prompts?
One of the main challenges with prompts is ensuring clarity and specificity. Overly broad prompts can lead to irrelevant or incorrect suggestions. The key is to balance being too vague and overly detailed.
In this session, we will look at how to address the approach to understanding the problem with writing a prompt! This involves breaking down the problem into smaller, manageable parts and formulating concise prompts that address each part.??
Anatomy of a Prompt?
In this session, you will not only learn about the basic building blocks of a prompt but focus on how to identify them and structure your prompts with relevant information for the responses to be relevant.
Let us break the anatomy of prompt for you to understand it better. Effective prompts for GitHub Copilot tasks are like clear instructions: they provide context about the situation, explain what needs to be done, outline any limitations, and sometimes even include examples for reference. By combining these elements, you can craft concise prompts that guide the GitHub Copilot towards the desired outcome.

Analyzing the 5W's for an Effective Prompt
Just like we assured you that this event will fill you with refreshing energy along with the company of Chai's knowledge, we are happy to announce an innovative method combined with common sense. You will understand more and better in the upcoming session, but this is known as Analyzing the 5W's for an Effective Prompt. Simply meaning (understanding the) what, why, when, where, and ways of the prompt.
Now, why the 5 Ws method? Because of its fruitful benefits mentioned below.

Finetune the Prompt?- Hands on!
Finetuning your prompt involves going over the initial input based on the responses you receive. If the GitHub Copilot’s suggestions are not right, adjust your prompt to provide more clarity or details. We will learn to apply the method of analysing the 5Ws we discussed above in real world scenario to showcase how this can enhance your prompt in this event.
This process might include rephrasing the task description, adding more context, or specifying additional constraints. You can hone the prompt to produce the most accurate and useful outputs through iterative refinement.?
See the Results?
Once you have crafted and finetuned your prompt, it’s time to evaluate the results. Assess the GitHub Copilot suggestions for accuracy, relevance, and completeness. If the results meet your expectations, you have successfully crafted an effective prompt. If not, revisit the previous steps and make further adjustments. Over time, as you gain experience with prompt engineering, you’ll develop a better intuition for creating prompts that consistently yield high-quality results.?
Conclusion?
Mastering the use of prompts for GitHub Copilot is a valuable skill that can enhance your productivity and coding efficiency. By understanding the problem, building effective prompts, making the GitHub Copilot aware of necessary boundaries and background, and finetuning through iteration, you can harness the full potential of Copilot.??
