How to correctly prescribe a shower commode?

Prescribing a shower commode—or any specialised medical equipment—requires a thoughtful approach to ensure it meets the patient’s specific needs.

The most important thing in many Occupational therapists’ minds is to not over- or under-prescribe a commode. Overprescription leads to wasted funds & unnecessary complexity when using the commode, whilst under-prescription may result in carer strain or injury, resulting in the user being unable to achieve their expected outcomes.

Below we have created a process to guide you through commode prescription.

1. Assess the Patient’s Needs:

  • Medical Condition: Understand the user’s condition that necessitates the use of a shower commode (e.g., mobility challenges, recovery from surgery).
  • Functional Requirements: Assess the user’s ability to transfer, their level of independence, and any specific needs to perform the daily tasks of living.
  • Physical Measurements: Measure the user’s height, weight, and any other dimensions needed to ensure the commode fits comfortably.

2. Evaluate the Type of Commodes:

  • Fixed vs. Portable: Decide if a stationary model or a portable one is more appropriate based on the user’s living situation & needs.
  • Adjustability: Look for features such as adjustable seat height, armrests, and footrests to customize the commode to the user’s needs.
  • Features: Consider additional features like pressure care seats for comfort, or removable parts for easy cleaning.

3. Consult with the Patient and Care Team:

  • Patient Preferences: Involve the patient in the decision-making process to ensure the commode meets their comfort and convenience needs.
  • Care Team Input: Collaborate with occupational therapists, physical therapists, or other healthcare professionals who may have insights into the best options. At this stage, you may wish to consult a commode specialist at Juvo Solutions to support.

4. Select the Appropriate Model:

  • Model Specifications: Choose a model that meets the user’s ability, size, and weight requirements and includes necessary features.
  • Manufacturer Recommendations: Follow any specific guidelines from Juvo Solutions relating to their range.

5. Complete the Prescription:

  • Prescription Form: Fill out the Juvo Solutions interactive prescription form with details including the user’s diagnosis, and the seating, sizing and customisation requirements, then send to a local supplier to provide the solution.

By carefully evaluating these factors and working closely with the user and their care team, you will be enabled to prescribe a commode that effectively supports the users’ health and ability to perform their daily tasks of living, giving the carer more time on the ‘focused care’ – the direct care that makes a difference.
