Napoleon Hill has very correctly mentioned in his book Think and Grow Rich,
“There is one quality that one must possess to win,
And that is definiteness of purpose,
The knowledge of what one wants,
And a burning desire to possess it.”
What is a burning desire?
A desire is to hope to have something you really want, in contrast, a burning desire is a pure reflection of your need to possess something. This burning desire leads you to your success and brings you the happiness, wealth, and life you desired for so long. Burning desire or obsession enables you to live for your dream ignoring every luxury in life.
How to possess a burning desire in life? To possess a burning desire in life, one needs to focus on their feelings, thoughts, vibrations, actions/reactions, and results. This process helps you comprehend your goals and the way to achieve them. However, a positive mental attitude is one of the prerequisites for attaining a burning desire for your goal. It’s not easy to achieve a goal without persistence, a positive attitude, and the right action and reaction. When you combine the four, you are able to feed yourself the right thoughts and emotions in order to achieve your aim in life.
This burning desire automatically develops motivation in life to engage in the right actions to attain your goal. The important thing here is to understand the motive behind your actions and reactions. Every thought you have and every action you are engaged in has some definite motive. If you are able to understand the motive behind your emotions and the resulted action and reaction, you can seamlessly achieve what you desire by controlling your emotions and thoughts.
Ten Basic Motives that Inspire your Thoughts
There are ten basic motives that feed your thoughts; they can be positive and negative depending on the situation you are in. Positive and negative thoughts come from emotions that are there to protect you in the direst of situations.
1. Desire For Self-Preservation of Basic Needs
2. The Emotion of Love
3. The Emotion of Fear
4. The Desire for Life After Death
5. The Desire for Freedom of Body & Mind
6. The Emotion of Revenge
7. The Emotion of Hatred
8. The Desire for Self-Expression & Recognition
9. The Emotion of Sex
10. Wealth & Money
Emotions like Revenge, hatred, love, fear, freedom, sex, and self-preservation are provoked by positive and negative thoughts. These emotions protect you from any potential danger or bring you immense pleasure. Emotions, for the longest of time, have helped people to fight for themselves and others, or love someone selflessly. Thus, we should remind ourselves of the perks of these emotions and how we can control our actions and reactions by understanding the trigger of these emotions at the right moment.
What can you do? Emotions are subject to reason and actions. Hence, if you are able to control your actions by timely comprehending the reason behind that emotion, you can definitely be able to use your energy on attaining your goals.
Self-suggestion or self-command is a way to control your emotions and the related actions and reactions. If you feel fear in your mind about something, before attempting it suggest or command yourself to be fearless. This helps your mind to set the goal of being fearless.
Last Word
Lou Holtz has rightly said, “Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." What’s important here is to not let the mind master you, but you master your mind. If you can control your mind and your emotions, you can easily achieve what you desire.
