How to control wastewater odor

Odour pollution is a concern not only to human health and welfare but also to air quality. It can affect mental attitudes and enjoyment of the environment. Emissions from wastewater treatment facilities (WWTPs), such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulphur compounds, generate the odor. It has previously had a low priority, but stricter environmental legislation, such as the EU Water Framework Directive, and the growth of residential areas closer to WWTPs have increased its importance.

What is the root cause of odor?

Before moving on to the causes, let’s understand some terms here -?

  1. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) - The amount of dissolved oxygen required by aerobic bacteria to break down the organic components in a water sample at a certain temperature and period is known as Biological Oxygen Demand.
  2. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) - The amount of oxygen required to oxidize the organic stuff in the water is known as the chemical oxygen requirement. The amount of oxidation and the number of organic materials in a water sample are determined via chemical oxygen demand testing.

These high BOD and COD deplete the oxygen in wastewater tanks, creating anaerobic and septic conditions. As a result, unpleasant H2S and NH3 gases get generated. These two gases are the most common sources of odor.

Ways to eliminate it -?

Biological odor control is effective in controlling odors and is being adopted widely. The biology promotes Aerobic conditions and digests excess sulphur and nitrogen.

Superweld’s OXYSUPER helps increase aerobic conditions, enhances biodegradation, and gives immediate control of odors.

Another product known as BIO FRESH contains sulphur-reducing and nitrifying microbes, which help digest H2S and NH3. BIO FRESH also has odor-absorbing herbal extracts like Yucca and Methi.

Results start showing in just a week.?
