How to Consistently Prioritize Yourself and the Ways You’ll Benefit

Self-prioritization is a crucial life skillset, which sadly, so often I see people struggle with. In fairness, prioritizing yourself isn’t something most of us are taught. Not only that, contrary societal programming and negative (even if well-intended) conditioning within your family and close inner circle regarding the supposed virtues of selflessness, working yourself into the ground, believing that happiness is unattainable, or that your dreams are foolish is something that we are all exposed to in varying degrees.

?

Just think of the hustle and grind workplace cultures where self-neglect and treating yourself like a machine is a major badge of honor. Or consider the sweet and selfless grandma who thinks of the needs of everyone else and never her own. Or the workaholic who tries to convince himself that he’ll be happy someday and he’ll find time to sleep when he is dead.?

?

None of these common examples are a recipe for a healthy and fulfilling life. If you recognize, have been negatively influenced by, or actively engage in the self-sabotaging pattern of not prioritizing yourself, this is your wake up call!

?

The only person who can make you a priority for yourself is you!

?

Clear Signs You Aren’t Prioritizing Yourself

  • You place the needs of everyone else above your own.
  • Your physical, mental, and/or emotional health have seen better days.
  • You regularly sacrifice your own interests, well-being, and personal life for work.
  • You neglect basic self-care including proper sleep, nutrition, hydration, and exercise.
  • You’ve sidelined your hopes and dreams or shoved them to the far recesses of your mind.
  • You believe that if you finally give enough to others, you’ll eventually get what you need.
  • You commonly experience disappointment or frustration over joy and fulfillment.
  • You habitually make excuses for your own self-neglect.

?

The above, left unchecked, leads to things like growing resentment, frustration and even anger; exhaustion from lack of self-care and potential burnout; sadly sacrificing your goals, talents, passions, and dreams that are meant to be realized and shared; and eventually long-term disappointment from experiencing an unfulfilling life.

?

Following are my professional recommendations to better prioritize yourself and the various ways that you’ll benefit.

?

How to Make Yourself a Priority in Your Own Life

  • Reflect upon and be honest with yourself about what you are allowing yourself to personally sacrifice. Identify and commit to consistently giving your needs, goals, and desires the attention they deserve.
  • Unearth your negative beliefs and unhealthy patterns around not prioritizing yourself. Seek out specialized support to resolve underlying root causes, upgrade your subconscious mind, and develop healthy new behaviors around self-prioritization.
  • Create a plan of action that includes scheduling time daily to honor your personal needs. This includes self-care; time for reflection; exercise, adequate sleep, rest and relaxation; quality time with loved ones; hobbies; personal development; and doing things that feed your soul.
  • Reconnect to the things that personally bring you joy. Make time each day, if only for a few minutes, to engage in something that fulfills you, lights you up, and/or makes you glad to be alive.
  • Establish clear boundaries around work and personal time. End your workday at a set time each day. Communicate that you don’t check emails or take calls after a certain hour.
  • Pause and take time to reflect before responding to requests. Learn to say NO to things that exceed your bandwidth, interfere with your ability to prioritize yourself, or aren’t mutually beneficial.

?

The Ways You Benefit From Making Yourself a Top Priority

  • You operate from a place of unconditional self-love and self-respect.
  • You teach others how to treat you in the healthy way that you deserve.
  • You model healthy self-regard to those around you, especially children.
  • You support your personal needs, physical health, and mental well-being.
  • Your goals, dreams, and unique talents get the time and attention they deserve.
  • You amplify the fulfillment, joy, and abundance in your life.

?

Bringing It All Together

Consistently prioritizing yourself isn’t about being selfish or irresponsible. Instead, doing so is an important part of operating with a healthy sense of self-regard and loving yourself unconditionally. Placing yourself on the top of your priority list allows you to show up as the best version of yourself, models healthy behavior to those around you, supports your well-being, and greatly enhances the quality of your life. The time to love, care for, and prioritize yourself is today and every day!

such an important conversation here Andrea. It's hard to turn the corner from "my energy should serve others regardless of the personal cost" to putting your energy towards honoring yourself. So much to unpack with that!
