This is how consistency can make or break your success

Hey there! It’s Ihuoma here again. Happy Thursday!

Today, I want to talk about something we can all relate to at any stage in life or business—consistency. It’s one of those things that sounds simple but can be surprisingly hard to master. Yet, it is absolutely essential for success, whether you’re trying to build a business, form healthier habits, or grow a personal brand.

You’ve probably heard the saying that it takes 21 days to form a habit. It’s an idea that suggests if you stick with something consistently for three weeks, it can start to feel natural. I know this timeframe might vary for different people, but the concept is solid—the more consistent you are, the easier the task becomes. Eventually, those things that once felt difficult will turn into routines you barely have to think about. Just like brushing your teeth or grabbing your morning coffee—it becomes second nature.

When we talk about consistency, we’re really talking about building trust—with ourselves and with others. It’s what brings stability and balance into our lives and businesses. Consistency isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up even when it’s difficult. It’s about pushing through, even when you don’t feel motivated, and showing that you’re reliable—not just to others but also to yourself.

Think about any area in your life where you’ve been successful. Chances are, it’s the result of sustained effort over time. Success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the small, consistent actions that build up to significant results.

Let’s bring this into the business world. There’s a local store owner who opens his shop whenever he feels like it. Some days it’s open at 9 AM; other days, he might not show up until noon. You rush to his store during an emergency, only to find it closed when you needed it most. After a few of these experiences, what would you do? You’d stop relying on that store. Even if the products are great or the customer service is top-notch, inconsistency will lose customers.

In the long run, no matter how excellent that store owner is at selling or how great his products are, if customers can't rely on him to be open, they will take their business elsewhere. It’s not just inconvenient—it’s a breach of trust. Customers want to know that you’ll be there when they need you, not just when it’s convenient for you.

Now, think about your own business or brand. Are you consistently delivering on your promises? Whether it’s maintaining a regular posting schedule on social media, sending out newsletters, or even simply following up with clients—consistency is the glue that holds everything together. It’s what builds trust with your audience and ensures that they keep coming back.

You don’t have to be perfect. We’re all human, and off days happen. Sometimes, life gets in the way, and you might miss a deadline, skip a workout, or let an email sit in your inbox a little too long. And that’s okay! What matters more than hitting every single mark is that you build the habit of getting back on track when you do slip up. That’s where the real power of consistency comes into play.

Maybe your social media posts don’t go viral every time, or your blog doesn’t get a lot of traffic in the beginning. That’s fine. The key is to keep showing up. Over time, you’ll build momentum, and people will start to notice the effort you’re putting in.

So, how do you go about being consistent when life is unpredictable? It’s easier said than done, right? But don’t worry—I’ve got some practical tips that can help:

1. Set Clear Goals: The first step is to be clear on what you’re aiming to achieve. Specific goals make it easier to track your progress and keep yourself accountable.

2. Create a Schedule: Once you know what your goals are, map out a schedule to accomplish them. Use tools like Google Calendar, Asana, or even a simple to-do list to help you stay organized. When tasks are scheduled, they’re more likely to get done.

3. Start Small: Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to do everything at once. Focus on a few key actions you can consistently perform. Over time, you can build on this foundation. Small, manageable steps are the building blocks of bigger achievements.

4. Track Your Progress: Seeing your progress, no matter how small, can be incredibly motivating. Keep a journal or use an app to track the consistency of your efforts.?

5. Find Accountability: Tell a friend, a colleague, or a mentor about your goals. When someone else knows what you’re working toward, you’re more likely to stick with it. You could even join an online community or group that shares similar goals. Accountability helps keep you on track.?

Think of your business or personal brand as a plant. If you water it consistently, feed it the right nutrients, and give it plenty of sunlight, it will thrive. But if you neglect it, no matter how much potential it has, it will wither away. The same goes for your relationships, your health, and your personal growth.

You might be wondering, “How do I find the time to be consistent when I’m already so busy?” You don’t need to overhaul your entire routine to see results. Focus on just a few key areas where you can be more consistent, and watch how it starts to ripple out into other parts of your life.

Even if you’re only able to accomplish the top two or three tasks on your to-do list each day, you’re still moving forward. Progress is progress, no matter how small it seems at the moment.

Take a moment to reflect. Is there an area in your business or life where you’ve been inconsistent? Whether it’s posting regularly on social media, reaching out to prospects, or maintaining a healthy work-life balance, think about where you can start making small changes. It’s never too late to course-correct and get back on track.
