How consistency & authenticity can help you learn to deliver impactful presentations for good

Hi from Cécile,

Today I’d like to highlight two types of behaviors I regularly come across in corporate presentations and meetings.

And it’s dead-certain to take out the worst of you when you present to your clients, colleagues or management.

Even if you don’t even realize it.

Those behaviors may be well-intended, but the result might be catastrophic.

Here they are!?

Some professionals display a very dominant behavior. It’s a manifestation of the “Alpha” mentality.

One that relies on demonstrating power, strength and control.

This type of presenter tries to dominate over others and influence their audience by talking loud, assertively, reaching the brink of aggressiveness.

They use their body language to signal they are on-top, in-charge, top-notch, A-class, [you name it…].

And we are not only talking about men (although it’s more expected in the representation of a gender role).?

Women can be “Alpha”, too; I’ve seen quite a few of them delivering presentations or speeches on stage.

They believe this approach proves their worth, and helps capture their audience’s attention and admiration.

They falsely believe that’s leadership.

The second type of behavior I regularly spot is faking it.

Otherwise talented professionals pretend they are someone else when they stand in the spotlight during a presentation or speech.

They hide who they truly are, their values and beliefs. “It's safer this way. I avoid being disliked or my credibility being challenged", they say.

Or worse they talk about certain values (popular ones) or use buzzwords to impress and make their audience like them.

But in reality they have nothing to do with those values or meanings.

They are not synced with their personal or company values. And trust me, any audience can quickly sense that. From miles…

Any of those two types of behaviors is a fake.

Not only do they not help you dominate, impress or become liked and popular, but they also increase the risk of failure, where failure = lack of impact.

A lot is at stake; your SUCCESS included!

You see, I use a simple yet effective framework to help professionals nail their presentations or any other public speaking event.

It’s called SUCCESS.

Yes, everyone wants their presentations to be successful but few do what it takes to make them a SUCCESS.

Simple

Unexpected

Concrete

Credible

Emotional

Storylike

Sexy

If you want to influence, inspire and make an impact, you need all 7 elements.

Can you now compare those elements with the two behaviors above?

It’s like opposites.

An “Alpha” presenter starts with their own perspectives only (audience needs are not a priority to them) and prefers to make things complicated and flamboyant to impress (but that can’t add to their credibility).

Someone who fakes it or is inconsistent with their values would certainly not let their emotions out, or be a bit spontaneous to share their passion.

See the difference? Now you may ask me

“Cécile, is there a remedy or a way to keep clear of those risky and unsustainable behaviors?”.

Read on to discover what you really need.

Authenticity & consistency

OK, first, you need to know deeply who you are, what you do and why you do it, how you do it and what are your values.

Without that awareness, my next tips may come in vain.

If you are yourself, it will be effortless. If you are acting like an avatar, you risk becoming exhausted, having to consciously create a behavior that is not yours.

Being self-aware and accepting yourself for what you truly are can lead you to authenticity.

That’s the Holy Grail of public speaking. Everybody talks about it; few know what it means or how to build it.

In my year-long experience, authenticity in the context of public speaking (and generally I would say) is about being true to your own personality, values, and spirit, regardless of the pressure that you're under to act otherwise.?

Your values, ideals, and actions align.

That brings me to the second essential ingredient of SUCCESS, that is consistency.

Being consistent means you always behave or perform in a similar way, with no great deviations.

Consistency removes uncertainty and leads to trust. Trust, in turn, leads to influence. You can’t ask for more.?

Now you know what to avoid and where to focus on to nail your corporate presentations or any other public speaking event.

Great insights, Cecile. Unfortunately, faking it or dominating the stage are common practices among professionals in organizations. Trying to impress won't work because your goal after all is not impress but to make an impact and trigger the right action.
