How to conjure up a great first impression for your new hire

Starting a new job can be exciting, but also a little bit scary! Just like navigating a haunted house, there can be unexpected twists and turns. As an employer, it’s important to create a welcoming and supportive environment that helps your new hire feel comfortable and confident.

To ward off any workplace spooks and prevent a second day ghosting, we’ll provide you with some tips to make sure their first day isn’t a horror story!

Give them a boo-tiful introduction

It’s important to make sure your new staff member is greeted with a warm welcome and introduction to the company workplace and culture. We like to invite prospective staff into the office to meet our team in an informal manner, show them around and teach them a little bit about how the day to day operates and address any questions they have. Masks off, of course!

Another thing to consider would be offering a week-long work trial. We’ve had some great success with this in the past and have found it to be a valuable tool that has allowed us to assess a candidate’s suitability, while also giving them a chance to evaluate our company culture and the role itself.

Make sure they have a spooktacular setup

Just like a witch who keeps their potions in order, you need to make sure that your new hire has an equally wicked setup! Ensure their workspace is equipped with everything they need to hit the ground running. A clean and organised workspace can create a positive first impression and help them feel more comfortable and is especially important if they have accessibility needs that need to be met to allow them to fulfil their role effectively.

Give a helping (skeleton) hand

It goes without saying, but don’t set and forget your new employees! Even if they’re experienced at what they do, it can take some time to adjust to a new system or way of working. Once you’ve clearly outlined their role, responsibilities and expectations, you should always be on hand to offer guidance and support.

Maintain an open dialogue and make yourself accessible – regular check-ins can help build trust and rapport. Pay attention to their concerns or suggestions. By listening, you show that their input is valued and that you’re committed to their success. At the same time, you should be offering constructive feedback to help them improve and grow.


By following these tips, you can create a positively haunting first-day experience for your new hire. Remember, a well-executed onboarding process not only sets the tone for their entire tenure but also reflects positively on your company’s spooky culture.
