How Confident Are You To Make A Change?

Horses ridden abroad. Riding at prestigious equestrian venues like Hickstead. All sounds impressive. And I was when I viewed a livery yard for Tara many years ago. The yard owner had ridden international classes and had lots of experience. I wanted not only the best for Tara in a livery yard. But also to be in the best place to help me progress with Tara. I knew she was the best - and wanted her to do well. And I didn't want to let her down.

But everything isn't all it seems. As the saying goes, all that glistens isn't gold. The equestrian yard owner here talked the talk. But didn't walk the walk. Poor mucking out, rugs chucked on the floor, and other things. Topped off by a horse having the illness Strangles, and keeping it quiet. Not only that but going off to a competition with another horse. So risking transmitting the virus.

How do you know though whether an equestrian yard or a business coach are only full of show, and no substance? It's not always easy. Sometimes you have to try something, work with someone, to know if it's for you. You can't always tell in advance.

An important question is, why are you looking? Are you looking with a clear mind, or is it clouded by desperation? I remember having looked for a new yard for Tara for a while. And for various reasons at that time, there weren't many vacancies in the right place. If we're "desperate" then it can lead us not listening to our own inner-guide. Our gut feeling is important!

But if you decide that being somewhere and working with someone isn't working out. Don't be afraid to stop. Change and find somewhere new or someone different to work with. But be sure what the reasons for changing are. It can be because you're not prepared to put the work in. Harsh but true! I knew at this livery yard, my non-negotiable was trust. I found this place untrustworthy, especially with the strangles illness issue. I've high standards for horse care and that didn't meet them.

In my coaching programme, T.A.R.A. the 'T' stands for targeted. Knowing what targeted action you need to take to achieve your goals. My goal at this yard was to have Tara cared for well, and to progress our dressage journey. I knew that this wasn't going to happen, so rather than drift along moaning. I decided to make a change. Much more positive for all concerned! I'm not saying it's easy though.

Do you find it easy to know when to make a change? Or do you make compromises, that don't help you get where you want to be?
