HOW COMPLEX WE ARE
We all know that we see with our eyes, hear with our ears and smell with our nose, these days we can implant a device and make a deaf person hear lifelong. Our body is made up of 30 to 40 trillion cells and these cells make up different organs and each organ has its unique function. Sitting in the thought bar this week is about some facts about our body in simple English.
The human body is a complex structure of interconnected systems and vital organs that work day in and day out to fulfil the functions necessary for everyday living. For example, in order to eat, your mouth, oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, and intestines must work together in sync to break down and digest what you eat while extracting the nutrients necessary to keep you healthy.
The tongue is covered in about 8,000 taste-buds, each containing up to 100 cells helping you taste your food. While normally we?have 32 teeth, Vijay Kumar ( see pic below) ?from Bangalore?has 37. While the Esophagus connects the throat to your stomach ,the small intestine ?is about 20 feet long and about an inch in diameter while the large intestine actually is only 5 feet long.
The number of hairs that someone has on their head can vary by individual. However, the average person has about 100,000 hairs on their head at one time. Male hair grows faster than female hair. And it ?grows fastest between the ages of 15 and 30, before slowing down. Some follicles stop working altogether as people get older. This is why some people get thinner hair or go bald.
Sweat is mainly water and ?some salts, Its main function is to control body temperature. As the water in the sweat evaporates, the surface of the skin cools. The sweat leaves your skin through tiny holes called pores, Humans have 2 to 4 million ?sweat glands in total, while men and women have equal amount of sweat glands , men produce more sweat per gland so men sweat more.

When your heart beats, it pumps blood through your circulatory system made up of blood vessels called arteries, capillaries and veins. If you were to lay out the vast network of blood vessels in an average adult, that ?would stretch for almost 100,000 miles. In comparison, our Earths circumference is approximately 25,000 miles. This means the blood vessels from just one person could stretch around the Earth many times.

The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. It produces our every thought, action, memory, feeling and experience of the world. This jelly-like mass of tissue, weighing in at around 1.4 kilograms, contains a staggering one hundred billion nerve cells, The brain sends and receives chemical and electrical signals throughout the body. Different signals control different processes, and your brain interprets each of them ?some make you feel tired some ?make you feel pain. A female brain shrinks during pregnancy technically called reductions in cortical thickness and surface area in sections of the brain called grey matter, this loss of volume improves the brain's ability to ?interpret ?babies' needs and emotions.?
The average person's fingernail grows about three millimetres a month, which is about one-tenth of an inch. It would take two-and-a-half years to grow your fingernails to one full inch. You may be surprised to know that an Indian by name Shridhar Chilal?( see pic below) from Pune holds the world record for the longest Finger nails, he did not cut his nails from the time he was 14 years for the next 66 years when in total his combined nail length was littles less that 30 feet.
To end this compilation here are some weird facts about our body, Earwax is actually a type of sweat, Your ears never stop growing, Your eyes blink around 20 times a minute. That’s over ten million times a year, you produce about 40.000 litres of spit in your lifetime. Or to put it another way, enough spit to fill around five hundred bathtubs, The average nose produces about a cupful of nasal mucus every day and lastly The only muscle that never tires is the heart
