How Community Pharmacists can help look after your dog's health

On the 11th of February we had a new arrival in our house, Pippa the dog.? Growing up, my late father always had jack russell dogs but that was 30 years ago and I was nervous as to what kind of dog we were going to get. ? After a few tricky weeks Pippa is settled and happy with our family at home. ? With a dog comes a list of other things you might need e.g. a vet, pet food, a kennel if you are going away among others.? I have even seen photographers who specialise in pets and someone who cremates pets when they pass away.? In the Pharmacy we sell some products for dogs and cats and with today being International Dog Owners Day it’s a good time to let you know how we can help you, look after your dog’s health and hopefully save on visits to the Vet.
The first product is Parex spot-on, which is available for different sizes of dogs and is used to treat fleas and ticks. ? It is recommended to apply this solution to the skin under the coat, between the dog’s shoulder blades until the pipette is empty.? To keep your dog free of fleas and ticks it is recommended to do this every three months.? The signs of a flea infestation would be the dog scratching itself a lot and when treating the animal it is also a good idea to treat their bedding area too.???

Another common medicine we sell are worming tablets for dogs and cats. ? Again, this is recommended to be done on a regular basis, ideally every six weeks.? The tablets can be mixed with their food and the company is really clever by giving you a sticker with each one so you can put it on your calendar at home after each tablet so you know where you stand.
Pets bring so much happiness to our lives and it is very important that we do everything we can to care for them whether it is walking them regularly, feeding them the proper nutrients, regular check-ups with the vet and small tasks like worming them and treating them for fleas and ticks regularly.? Everyday should be international pet day but for today whatever breed of pet you have I hope you do something special with it.
