How to combine Digital Transformation and Sustainability for a better future

How to combine Digital Transformation and Sustainability for a better future

When we think about the myriad of electronic devices that we put away in the drawer each year because they are broken or obsolete, or when we read about the energy consumption of large and complex technological infrastructures such as servers and data centers, we find it difficult to think that technologies can have a sustainable implication.? Yet, if we integrate them into development and recycling strategies, the effect changes, and the environmental and social impact improves dramatically.

To achieve this benefit, we need to view innovations as tools to optimize resources, reduce waste, and improve efficiency in various areas. For example, artificial intelligence could monitor and optimize energy use, reducing CO2 emissions. At the same time, blockchain could provide transparency in supply chains, promoting more ethical and sustainable practices.

The opportunities are numerous, so it is worth analyzing the contexts in which this approach will generate global effects and improve not just a small garden but the entire planet.

Inclusive connectivity to reduce the digital divide

Let's start with the concept of connectivity - the need to ensure that people in all societies, regardless of geographic location, economic status, or social background, have equitable access to digital technologies. Today, the digital divide is a major barrier limiting the development of entire communities, depriving many people of economic opportunities, education, and advanced health services.

How do we reduce this gap? By changing our approach. The bulk of the job will have to be done by companies investing in network infrastructure in disadvantaged areas, such as rural communities or developing countries. But this is only a first step. Even more necessary will be to promote the use of low-cost, high-accessibility technologies, such as mobile devices and cloud platforms, to facilitate inclusion.

Use of AI to improve the healthcare sector

Another sensitive and valuable area where process digitization and AI can really make a difference is the healthcare sector. Thanks to AI's analytical capabilities and large-scale sharing of digital data, physicians can access medical records and patient information from around the world. This is breaking down geographic boundaries, improving diagnosis and treatment, and fostering collaboration among international experts to provide more effective care, especially for those complex or rare clinical cases.

Not only that, digitizing medical records, dosages, and treatments means being able to personalize care and medications by increasing the effectiveness of treatments.

Steps forward, then, that are important for patients but also improvements for the operational management of hospitals. Indeed, a smart, digital approach improves resource allocation, reducing waiting times and optimizing the use of materials.

Accessible education for all

Those who ban the use of AI or digital tools in schools do not realize that these technologies could become important allies in improving learning and supporting children with special needs.

How? By enriching verbal and textual explanations with multimedia content. Each student has their own method of learning: some learn best through pictures or video, some prefer audio, and some need explanations that combine several tools.

Not to mention immersive technologies, such as virtual reality. Operating in protected environments allows people to experiment with new ways of learning, such as virtual labs, or to apply acquired knowledge in simulated work settings that replicate reality but in an educationally controlled manner. These innovative experiences enhance risk-free practice, promoting more engaging and safer learning.??

Institutions that adopt digitization of classrooms and integrate AI will not only make access to knowledge more democratic but also create a more inclusive and flexible educational ecosystem that can adapt to the diverse needs of students and better prepare them for future employment.

Technology and sustainability in public services

Technology can also improve sustainability in the public service sector, which is so vast and complex that digital solutions are especially needed to improve accessibility, speed up paperwork, and facilitate the sharing of vast amounts of documents among different entities. One of the most promising innovations in this area is blockchain, with its immutable and decentralized ledger. Its features ensure data integrity, prevent manipulation, and improve trust in public transactions.

A concrete example? The use of blockchain in electoral processes. This technology ensures that votes are recorded securely and verifiably, reducing the risk of fraud and increasing citizens' trust in the democratic system.

Data-driven governance strategies

We conclude by discussing the digital technologies that make governance strategies more responsive, accurate, and sustainable. What technologies are we talking about? Machine Learning, Blockchain, and Big Data. This combination enables real-time predictive analytics, improving decision-making and minimizing errors.

Then, if collaboration and cloud tools are added to them, remote management becomes even easier. Less physical travel, more data sharing, and the breaking down of geographic boundaries - this is what is meant by a more efficient and sustainable governance model.

From this brief overview, we can learn how pursuing mere profit provides benefits to a small number of people who already enjoy privileges. Instead, investing in strategies that integrate digital technologies with sustainable projects means giving everyone the opportunity for a more prosperous and sustainable future, creating value that spreads and lasts.
