Have you ever gotten annoyed because of improper communication in your team?
And it only seems to be getting worse.
When you are a design or construction corporation manager, you want to have great communication in your team, but this can often be as arduous as Sisyphean work.
When you think about the last conversation you had with your team, how do you feel about it?
? Was it carried out following your expectations?
? Did you find out what you wanted?
? Was it a productive conversation or maybe it was just a chit-chat?

I was in such a situation during my manager role at a couple of corporations where I used to work.
Let me set the scene,
My teams were multinational and multicultural. Most of the time, it was very beneficial because we could use their different ways of thinking, knowledge, skills, and approaches, too.
That was great and the job was done!
?The biggest issue I had was a communication problem...
Each time when we started a conversation, we couldn’t finish it. There were no conclusions, no plans.
The same was true in the case of meetings, either online (during C-19 and remote work time) or in person.
The meetings which should’ve taken only 30 minutes, extended even up to 1 hour. I thought that was great as I could’ve talked to my employees and known what their concerns were.
Maybe that was true, but…
?? Because of this, I was not going home at 5 pm, but at 7 pm, sometimes even later…
It took too long...
??Finally, I decided to make some minor changes.
First, I talked to employees and told them about the changes that should occur in our communication at all levels and channels.
Then the changes were implemented.
What was that?
When you are a senior or mid-level manager you will have a lot of problems with proper communication.
Fixing this can often be as tiring as dialling a number on the phone while wearing boxing gloves.
When I was working at a corporation it was tough for me as well, until…
??I decided to make some changes that really work…
Before I reveal that to you, you first need to understand a few elements of our professional and personal lives.
We communicate every day with our family members, friends, colleagues, and people in the shop or on the street.
But does our communication always convey information?
Should we use the same method of communication in different situations?
The answer for both queries can be only one:
? NO!
?? The way we communicate must be adjusted to the situation we are in.
When we talk to our friends we use more intimate language, expressions, tone etc.

When we talk to the people, we meet on the street our language and communication will be at a greater distance.
So, what is in a situation when we speak with our colleagues and our bosses?
Very often we forget that the person we talk to is not a person who wants to know everything about us, our personal life or even maybe what happened yesterday with our lovely singing nightingale…
People must understand that when they are at work there are business relationships between each other. There is no room for chit-chats about private life unless the interlocutor and time are right, i.e., conversation with a well-known colleague during lunchtime.
The same story is true when we use electronic tools to contact people.
We use communicators (released by e.g. Microsoft, Google, Meta, LinkedIn…) not only for quick, short and not too important or informal messages. This is a huge problem!
?? Next channel, emails!
Most employees send emails that are just elaborate.
They forget that this doesn’t need to be an essay with 500 words, a 1.5-line distance etc. In their opinion, using as many bells and whistles as possible is better to get the desired outcome from the addressee.
Does this work?
???? NO - not at all!!!
