Summertime reminds me of camp and how I have been mentoring and coaching young people for over 50 years in diverse cultures, environments and countries. Although most of my clients now are middle and senior level executives, there is nothing like the energy exchange that comes from coaching young leaders walking the journey of "Becoming The Best Version of Themselves." I'm not sure who learns more, them or me... Then there are those young people who are "All About The Hustle," their drive and determination is such a refreshing experience. They help remind me why I became a Leadership Coach in the first place, ...to help others... However, talking to young people and coaching them are two different things. If you are in a position to coach young people, including some of the million-dollar athletes, wealthy privilaged youth, or even gangsta's from the hood, it can be a frustrating challenge at times.
Therefore, Coaching Young Leaders requires a tailored approach that recognizes their unique needs and aspirations. Here are some specific strategies and techniques to effectively coach young leaders:
- Build a Trusting Relationship: Establish a supportive and trusting coaching relationship with the young leader. Create a safe space where they feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations. Be approachable, empathetic, and non-judgmental in your interactions.
- Active Listening and Empathy: Practice active listening skills to understand the young leader's perspective fully. Show empathy by putting yourself in their shoes and seeking to understand their experiences and emotions. Reflect back what you hear to demonstrate that you understand and validate their feelings.
- Clarify Goals and Objectives: Help the young leader define their goals and objectives. Encourage them to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Work together to identify areas of growth and development that align with their vision and aspirations.
- Strengths-Based Approach: Recognize and leverage the young leader's strengths. Help them identify their unique talents and capabilities and find ways to utilize them effectively. Focus on building their confidence and self-belief in their abilities.
- Foster Self-Awareness: Guide the young leader to develop self-awareness. Encourage self-reflection and introspection to help them understand their values, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Use assessments, reflective exercises, and open-ended questions to deepen their self-awareness.
- Skill Development: Provide guidance and resources to help young leaders develop core leadership skills. Offer relevant reading materials, recommend workshops or training programs, and share personal experiences and insights. Encourage them to seek out experiential learning opportunities, such as taking on challenging projects or seeking leadership roles in extracurricular activities.
- Challenge Comfort Zones: Help young leaders step out of their comfort zones and embrace growth opportunities. Encourage them to take on new responsibilities, tackle unfamiliar tasks, and face challenges. Support them through the process, providing guidance and reassurance as they navigate uncharted territory.
- Provide Feedback and Support: Offer timely and constructive feedback to young leaders. Highlight their strengths and successes, and provide specific recommendations for improvement. Focus on the development of specific skills or behaviors and provide actionable steps for growth. Be available to answer questions, offer guidance, and provide support as they navigate their leadership journey.
- Encourage Reflection and Learning: Foster a culture of reflection and learning. Encourage young leaders to reflect on their experiences, challenges, and successes. Help them extract lessons learned and identify areas for growth. Encourage them to seek out learning opportunities, whether through books, podcasts, workshops, or networking events.
- Celebrate Achievements: Celebrate milestones and achievements with the young leader. Recognize their progress and successes, no matter how small. Celebrate their efforts and provide positive reinforcement to build their confidence and motivation.
Remember, coaching is a collaborative process, so involve the young leader in setting the agenda, defining their goals, and crafting action plans. Tailor your approach to their individual needs, preferences, and learning style. By providing guidance, support, and empowerment, you can help young leaders develop their skills, confidence, and leadership potential.
These are not just strategies and techniques; this is what is required in the new times we are living in. 1995 was a long time ago, 2015 is deep in the past and soon 2023 will be yesterday. How are you coaching young people for 2030, how are you preparing them to be leaders in 2040, and what will your legacy be in 2050? Technology may have changed the game, but the need to coach young leaders as they walk their journey to Becoming The Best Version of Themselves while Getting Their Hustle On has not changed. Young people are our future - Teach Them Well and Let Them Lead The Way. What A Wonderful World...
