How close to "The Edge" are you?

This year my health mentoring clients and I have had plenty of conversations about "The Edge"
It's that space we've been tiptoeing along (or careening next to) these last couple of years.
The pace has been frenetic
The uncertainty has been high
The schedule is full to bursting
When we think we are about to get some space, another thing pushes us closer to it
It's where we stop being able to operate at our best. Sometimes it's where we even stop operating well.
Many people feel like they have been teetering close to that edge. The work we do on their health (and in effect on their life) gives them a bit of space from that edge. They have capacity if something forces them sideways.
The tricky thing is, that the edge isn't a sheer drop.
You're not up there on the ridge one minute then plummeting to the ravine below the next.
The edge is actually a slope.
It's a slope you slide down bit by bit. Your performance slowly gets chipped away.
And because it's not a straight plummet, at times it's hard to notice when you are sliding down the slope. It's gradual.
How do I know?
I've slid down the slope a bit myself the last few weeks.
We've moved house - sold one and bought another on the same day. And the admin associated with that.
Our eldest has finished his first term at school.

I'm working on building a business, as well as part time as a physio.
My health actions have taken a hit
I needed to review where I'm at on that slope. And I've been sliding down
Thankfully I know what to do to move back up the slope
I need to sleep
I need to move
I need to connect
I need to say no to the unimportant stuff
I need to rest
I need to nourish my body
I don't immediately get back to the Ridgeline. Instead I climb slowly back up the slope
Are you at the edge?
Do you have capacity?
Have you been sliding down the slope?
How can you create space between yourself and the “edge”?

1 年Nice post! Lots of food for thought here! I’m of the opinion we should push ourselves especially in our 20s/30s - test the limits- build capacity!Figure out what works and what doesn’t. As you age you get smarter and start to prioritise the important stuff more + get more balance in life :)
