How to Choose YOUR Recruiter

As a job seeker, there are a lot of ways to approach your job search. Using a recruiter is a choice that you have to make but if you do decide to partner with someone on your job search, what should you look for?

1.Specialist – I cannot over emphasise this enough. Use a specialist. Make sure who you partner with knows your industry, can understand your background and has a track record recruiting in the specific areas that are suited to your career goals and background.

2.Experienced – Recruitment is a lot more complicated than you might think. Experience counts in this industry. Experienced recruiters will be able to connect the dots of your career goals, offer honest advice and understand how and where to look at potential opportunities for you.

3.Honest & Trustworthy – Most recruiters are honest and trustworthy but, unfortunately, there are some who are not and may not take a long term approach when working with you. Two good barometers of this are:

A) Longevity – if a recruiter has been operating for a long time, chances are they have done things the right way by candidates and clients alike.

B) Referrals – most good recruiters will live and die by referrals. Referrals are only generated by doing things the right way.

4.Reach – Good and established recruiters will know the right people in the right places. Getting your CV in front of decision makers in the best way is crucial to success in your next career move.

5.Partnership Approach – Your career is important and getting the right advice is imperative. You should look for a recruiter who understands this and is prepared to work with you in achieving your long term career ambitions. Taking a longer term partnership approach means that you can benefit from someone who understands the need to build a solid relationship and really understand your background and aspirations.

At the end of the day, follow your gut. It’s advice that I often give to candidates when making decisions on job offers and it holds true when choosing a recruiter. If something feels off or if you feel like you are being sold something all the time, it may be time to walk away.
