What is tungsten carbide?
Tungsten carbide, known as the teeth of industry, consists of tungsten and carbon atoms. To manufacture tungsten carbide products, the binder powder, cobalt powder, should be added into the tungsten carbide powder and milled into a certain grain size in the ball milling machine. And then dried in the spray drying tower. The mixture powder will be compacted into different sizes and shapes according to drawing, by different means. The compacted products will be put into the HIP sintering furnace. Most tungsten carbide products are produced following this procedure, which can be called powder metallurgy, and so does tungsten carbide rods.

What are tungsten carbide rods?
Tungsten carbide rods can be produced to a long one, or a short one, with the shape of the bar. During production, the mixture powder can be compacted into tungsten carbide rods, in 3 different ways. They are die pressing, extrusion pressing, and dry-bag isostatic pressing. They can be processed into different types of tungsten carbide cutting tools, like tungsten carbide end mills.?

Characteristics of tungsten carbide rods
1. High red hardness, abrasion resistance, and hardness;
At room temperature, the hardness of tungsten carbide rods can reach 86-93 HRA, and it can also keep its high hardness, and outstanding wear resistance between 900-1000℃. Rods made of tungsten carbide have better performance than that made of high-speed steel. The cutting speed of tungsten carbide rods is 4-7 times higher than that of high-speed steel, the service life can be 5- 18 times longer, and it can process materials with a hardness of up to 50 HRC.
2. High levels of both strength and elastic modulus;
The strength of tungsten carbide rods can reach as high as 6000MPa, and the elastic modulus of tungsten carbide rods can reach as high as 105 MPa, both of which are greater than those of high-speed steel.
3. High resistance to oxidation and corrosion;
As tungsten carbide has great chemical stability, and hardly makes a reaction with acids, alkalis, and oxygen, it is resistant to oxidation and corrosion.
4. Low linear expansion coefficient;
Linear expansion coefficient is the rate of change of unit length per unit degree change in temperature. During operation, there is no change to the size of the form.

How to choose tungsten carbide rods grade?
To make high-quality tungsten carbide rods, high-quality raw materials must be needed. We will be strict to test raw material powder. And the raw material we applied, is 100% raw material, rather than recycled tungsten carbide scraps.
Compared with metal cutting, cemented carbides used in metal forming applications are always subject to high impact and shock forces. Therefore, grades used for metal forming applications must have a high level of toughness, sufficient wear resistance and strength, coarse particle size, and high binder content.

Here are some recommended grades:
YG6, YG8, YG6X: It can be used for processing hard wood, aluminum alloy profiles, brass rods, cast iron, etc.
YG10: It is used for processing hard wood, softwood, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
UBT20: UBT20 tungsten carbide rods are applied sub-fine grain size and can be used for processing by medium speed, which can achieve good general performance. This grade is recommended to manufacture drill bits and end mills. They are suitable for cutting ordinary alloy steel, aluminum alloy, heat-resistant alloy, cast iron, etc.
UBT610: UBT610 tungsten carbide rods are applied ultra-fine grain size and have excellent heat resistance. UBT610 tungsten carbide rods are suitable for high-speed milling and drilling and to process alloy steel, heat-resistant alloy, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and other material.
UBT25: UBT25 tungsten carbide rods are applied ultra-fine grain size and have good wear resistance and toughness. They are suitable for finishing and processing alloy steel, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, and so on, and are suitable for making end mills, and reamer.
UBT508: UBT508 tungsten carbide rods are suitable for processing hardened hard steel, aluminum alloy, glass fiber reinforced materials, high wear-resistant material stainless steel, composite graphite, PCB, plastic, and so on.
UBT10: UBT10 tungsten carbide rods are applied ultra-fine grain size and have good wear resistance, so they are recommended to manufacture in end mills and engraving tools. They are suitable for processing aluminum magnesium alloy, composite sheet, PCB, plastic, glass fiber reinforced plastic, and so on.
UBT209: UBT209 tungsten carbide rods have high wear resistance and toughness, and are suitable for finishing hardened steel, plastic, glass fiber, stainless steel, and aluminum alloy. They are suitable for manufacturing 0.25mm end mills, drills, and boring tools.
