How to choose thread milling cutters?

1). Workpiece hardness: The definition of high-hardness materials is around HRC40. For workpiece materials exceeding HRC40, high-hardness carbide thread mills are required.

2). Internal or external thread: Some specifications of internal and external threads that are not universal, such as M and UN. For other thread specifications, thread mills are universal.

3). Thread length: The basic principle is to not exceed 3 times the cutter diameter. If the thread length is longer, try to choose a carbide thread milling cutter. If it exceeds 3D, it can be customized with a shock absorber, or consult a professional engineer.

4). Thread size: whether to choose the carbide thread milling cutter or the indexable thread milling cutter, generally speaking, the carbide thread milling cutter is used for M12 and below, while the indexable thread milling cutter is for more than this specification. Of course, customer's requirements and processing environment must also be considered. For example, for a highly finished surface, the carbide thread milling cutter should be chosen.

5). Workpiece batch: For huge sampling needs and complicated thread specifications orders, partial profile thread milling cutters should be used as the pitch is adjustable. A large batch can use an indexable thread milling cutter, and carbide thread milling cutters are for the general batch.

6). Internal or external cooling: In the market, most suppliers would recommend internal cooling thread milling cutters. However, it is unnecessary unless it is high-hardness materials, difficult to process, deep hole thread, or high finish requirement. Otherwise, the external cooling thread milling cutter should be given priority.
