How to choose the right?SALES career for you ?
First of all , why choose to be a salesman?
?I bet when you we’re in school, your teacher will ask to write an essay with the title of “My Ambition” , “My Dream” or whatever with the same meaning. And I bet that most of you wrote about being a doctor , lawyers , engineer , architects, army policeman but definitely no one write about being a salesman.
Most of us going into sales by accident. Like my case , I am desperately looking for a job and I can’t find a job that is related to my major in college due to bad economy. Hence, they are a lot of entry level sales job which don’t required any experiences and of course , they give you a promise of uncapped commission. (Does it ?)
?Anyway, back to the point , just in case if you’re considering a sales career, do ask yourself?- Why I should be in this career for a long term. Is it fit for me?What are the consequence of staying in this line of work?
?How could you answer all these questions ? Honestly I don’t know but the next 3 POINTS might help you with it !!
?1.Sell your passion or the things that you love
?THIS IS THE MOST CRUCIAL PART in?considering a sales career. You need to sell things that you believe in , like , love and care . Like me for examples, my first sales job was in medical devices industry. With this jobs , people looked up to me as being successful, due to high paid commission and?“vast” medical knowledge. But the truth is , I only stayed because of money. Don’t get me wrong I love money more than honey. But to pretend that you’re passionate in something, you will never?last for long, believe me. I don’t want to sell medical devices for the rest of my life. It’s not what I love or even care.
?Hence after 2 years of glamorous career, I decided to change my career path to be in the tech industry as that is where I want to do in the next 2 or 3 decades. I know I am passionate in tech as I always read up and watch youtube video about tech , machine learning, AI , e-commerce etc. And to be honest in terms of earning, it’s less than what I made previously as a medical devices salesman but I achieve job satisfaction. With this, I know that I will grow in terms of knowledge , earnings and career enhancement.
One thing that you need to know that selling is a tough job. It always has it owns?up and down , politics , rejections etc. So the only way to stay in this line is?to have passion in what you sell. Have ever read about Steve Jobs before ? How many downtime he had and after got fired from Apple , he founded a new company that sell computers as well. He stays in that line because he is passionate about it.

?2.Leverage your strength
In sales career, different industry use a different method in selling. Tech industry might separate the sales team?for each sales cycle (e:g inside sales , account manager , customer success) but other industry such as real estate, only 1 person that handles the whole sales cycle.
?For example, if you knows how to close a deal but poor at prospecting, choose tech sales because it is a common practice where they have a lead generation team that will book a meeting for you!
?You can apply your knowledge as well when considering an industry to work for. For example, you know about property investment, then real estate might be the best for you.
?Or you learn IT in college but you more preferred to talk to people than handling all the servers. Then It sales or pre-sales might be the for you.
?Or you learn about human resources management in college , you can choose to be a recruitment consultant and earn commission from every placement that you made
We might not be good to sell everything. Try to focus on something that you already good at might be a good leverage to start a prosperous sales career.
?3.Choose the right company
?So you know what you love and your strength, you probably know what path or industry you want to start with. How to choose the right company ??Right company is very subjective.?What I mean with?right company here is a they provide a sustainable product or services and always keep updated with the market sentiments.
?You might come across with various job advertisement where the employers promise things like uncapped commission , work – life balance , flexible timing etc. Trust me, it’s not enough to judge based solely on that. Do you research , read some reviews from Glassdoor, customer’s feedback and etc.
?You don’t want to be selling something is not useful . During the interview, it’s not just about them interviewing you but you need to interview them as well. Remember , they hire you because they believe you can bring a number that is higher than whatever salary they offered. It’s okay to interrogate a?bit and be selective
?All in all , that’s my 2 cents based on my last 4 years in sales. What do you think ? Still considering a sales career ? Let me know your thoughts in the comment.
You can write out blogs too if you’d like haha
