How to Choose the Right Marathon that Matches Your Running Goals

Do you want to complete the Abbott World Marathon Majors?

Do you want to run a marathon each month?

How about running in a Disney World marathon?

The opportunities feel endless when there is a marathon right around the corner each month. Whether or not you feel ready to run 26.2 miles, there is a marathon coming up somewhere in the country you could be a part of if you'd like!

Here are five ways we can choose the right marathon for us:

1. Travel Time

Is the marathon in your city or will you need to travel somewhere?

Needing to travel 2-5 hours driving or on an airplane can require some rest time afterward and before the race. Most people enjoy flying to their destination two to three days before race day to see the city they're visiting.

Travel costs, accommodations, and meals will need to be factored into the costs of registering for race day if it's away from home. If your race is less than an hour away, then you're in luck and don't need to worry about this part - just the registration fees!

2. PR Goals

Many runners love challenging themselves and beating their past results. Your personal record (PR) will be something quantifiable that you are going after - this could be the time you complete the marathon, how many times you stop for a break, or

If it's your first marathon, completing it at a certain time can feel rewarding.

3. Boston Qualifier

This marathon requires applicants to apply based on time constraints. Selecting a marathon that qualifies for the Boston Marathon and fits your personal goals is essential to making sure you get closer to this accomplishment.

4. Accessibility & Race Logistics

Understanding the area where the marathon will take place will help a ton with how long it will take you to get around. Transportation on the day of the race will determine what time you must leave and what path to take to get there. If your race is a travel destination, time and accommodations will be a large factor in how long it will take to get there and how to get there.

5. Elevation & Atmosphere

First-time marathon runners might opt for a flat course with lots of crowd support. Those marathons will help you ease through the 26.2 miles and feel excited as people are cheering you on. Depending on the elevation, it can be difficult for people who don't consistently walk on the terrain to catch the right amount of breath while running.

Tougher hills don't help with hitting a PR. Trail running is unpredictable and mountainous. Flatter and faster courses will help anyone ease into an easier and more enjoyable run.
