How to choose a right Cofounder?

There are traits which differentiate each individual from other , just like we marry a girl we look for all her attribute , same applies while searching for a Cofounder , There is no tool to judge a person in one day that's why many people before marrying keep a gap so can really understand "What drives?" their better half. What can Entrepreneurs do for this? , Bring in the person on board after testing with the theories in your mind , Trust on your intuition, Now he might ask you for equity , fix the equity by a normal mail , tell him to work for a month before entering into any kind of Legal Agreement , one month is a sufficient time for judging a person , now judge him on below attributes-

1) Excitement - His excitement should be sustainable , not below certain threshold , if he troubles you a lot by raising certain queries mostly in the odd time , be ready to face it , he is living your dream and he want succeed early even before you imagined.

2) Problem Solving - If he discusses more on ideas of getting traction in business , he is a right fit as this is what he has to do in long run.

3) Efficiency - If he is giving less time on your business but getting some good results that means he is a person who values time and is result oriented , just think what he can do one's he is there full time on your vision.

4) Humorous - Entrepreneurship is a tough journey , you don't need a all time serious individual , you need a person who can make you laugh in this journey , this habit depicts the passion of the individual. He should be a tension free individual just like we had Ajay Jadeja in Indian Cricket Team , He should be able to keep himself happy in the worst situation assuming it just as a phase of this journey.

5) Influencing - If he is someone carrying the vigorous thoughts on the dynamics of the Business , he is someone who can influence and mold people's towards you and this is what you need.

6) Learning Attitude - If he is excited to share with you the feedback he had after visiting his each client , that means he wants you to learn , He knows that since you are on the top you should learn from his Learning and this will help you evolve better your product and services , he may not come back to you incase the learning are the repeated patterns.

7) Ambitious - These are the people who know what it takes to stand apart from the crowd , their Research , their action and their approach will explain this attribute. They are not excited with small success as they know what they paid for it and their charm for work never diminishes over time.

8) Multitude of Efforts - If suppose he is in business development you don't know what technique of reaching to the customers will work , see the variations in efforts he made irrespective of the results , Does he owns some better technique ? or he randomly keep brainstorming the ways he could touch Target audience , this is much important then the execution itself which can be done even by the new comers , you need people with strategic cum Tactical orientation in start.

9) Character - If someone is good at showcasing all above attributes , he can assumed to be good at character as he knows that only good deeds are going to pay in long run , Perseverance automatically is there in his blood.

Make a table of above attributes and give marks ranging from 1 to 10 for each , some people ambitious nature is dormant until they don't achieve so even if that's 4 its fine , Multitude of efforts is very important so should not result below 7 , Learning attitude most important for evolution over time so should not lie below 8 , one can become influential over time with the Learning made so 5 is good mark , Efficiency improves over time so 6+ is a good number , Excitement and problem solving are the mandatory need so must mark minimum 8 for this attribute. Being Humorous is a personal attribute and its better you seek a person with maximum numbers in it. Now you can draw your conclusion on character and detect the best mix of what suits you. You can enter a Legal agreement after judging a individual for a month.

If you aim to look for a perfectionist it's something next to impossible , people achieve perfection in their stream with the initiative they took in their journey , still they don't claim their perfection after working for decades due to the complex nature of business , we can relate it with Facebook crumbling over ones perfectionist Orkut.

You are aiming to produce the future Leadership while searching a Cofounder , You don't need people with core mindset of Executives , ultimately you need a person who can guide and influence the future team for the core vision of the company , You exactly don't need a person who's vision is to work hard for the organization ,You need a person who in small time can set a example for other's who join your company.This is what motivates the new joiners to replicate his working style.

Adding up one of the most important criteria - Check he/she is not a egoist or egotist. EGO clash among founders / co-founders has been one big reason for disasters world over. Make sure your co-founder and team members don't harbor EGO behind their chests. Good luck. Open to discuss co-founder or advisory participation with start-ups! All the best Ravikant Tripathi.
