How to choose a job you love
Five years ago, I had started volunteering on writing for a news project of the United Nations based in Ghana, while I waited for employers (I had applied to) to call.
Sincerely I never saw myself doing communications, nothing would suggest, including academic backgrounds. But somehow I enjoyed the pro bono writing, and for two years, was committed to tasks, amid discouragements from a close friend. ‘‘Who does free jobs these days,’’ he would say to me. But I kept at it.
And who would later believe that volunteering experience got me into one of Nigeria’s leading financial newspapers and next, foremost online news portal to where we are today, being sought after overseas.
Yes! A job is good, secure it if you can - I’ve got one. But it’s not all there is. Some day, I will host a career talk on TV, to inspire younger persons that earning a living doesn’t necessarily depend on 9-5s, as everyone, including family and friends told us. But could begin with finding a volunteering opportunity and developing a skill.
I am a witness.
