How To Choose Gloss and Texture For Powder Coating
One of the most common surface treatments is powder coating. The process deals with protecting metal fabrication. Surface Parts acquire an aesthetic quality finish suiting customers’ wants. At Creatingway, we deal with powder coating as a surface finish. The use of different colors on a product increases its beauty.
How Does Powder Coating Work?
Polyester and pigments make up the powder coat.?We place it in a pressurized gun’s hopper to preserve the coat. So, the release of airflow allows polyester particles to move freely.?An electromagnetic coil positively charges the particles inside a barrel. In contrast, the coated part is negatively charged. The powder gets blasted onto the workpiece enabling it to stick.
Magnetic forces leave the powder coat smooth, eradicating any patches. Once we apply the coat, we place it in an oven. A temperature of 200 degrees Celsius melts the coat into a molten state. The curing process takes place for about 10 to 20 minutes. Thus, the molecular design changes to an elastic and resistant coating. The durability of the surface treatment arises from elasticity.
What’s The Gloss Level?
We consider three things while choosing powder coating properties;
The uniformity of gloss levels differs in various platforms. Service providers have different tastes changing the standards of gloss levels. We use a gloss level numerical form in gauging different levels. Numbers in the gauging are looked at and not the description.
Matte
Matte is also known as the flat. The flat has a gloss level of 30 (+/-5%). Light reflects from the surface and later without a clear-cut. Such properties hide surface imperfections. Higher gloss levels are easier to clean than matte. The trait arises from surface flatness levels.
Gloss
The gloss is a common gloss level that stands around 70(+/-5%). Surface friction is less, making it easier to clean compared to matte. The reflection of the surface is nice and not highly defined.
High Gloss
A high gloss has levels above 80(+/-5%). Its reflective surface is gleaming. High gloss aids us in bringing out imperfections found on metal surfaces. A smooth surface is good for cleaning. Such traits play a major role in industries like food and hospitals.
Texture
Modification of the texture differs according to wants. For powder coating, color and gloss levels are essential. Since texture restricts the availability of different varieties. Such traits hide surface imperfections making the layer appear smooth. There are three types of surface textures;
Sand Texture
There is no difference between sand texture and sandpaper. So, the limitation of the gloss level is up to 20. Surface roughness increases the friction of the workpiece. Such a trait is handy in corrosion resistance applications.

Wrinkle Texture
Wrinkle texture is in comparison to sand texture. They slightly differ in roughness hence making them different. In terms of grip, wrinkle texture is the best. The higher the surface roughness, the better the grip.
Hammered texture
A hammered texture finish looks like an orange peel. In terms of gloss levels, the hammered texture has the highest. Such a trait adds durability, reducing surface preparation.
How To Compare The Powder Coating And Wet Painting?
Wet painting is an old version of applying a colored coating. We use pressurized vessels like spray or pump to apply wet paint. Upon application, the surface is left to dry for the paint to stick firmly.
Advantages of Powder Coating Over Wet Paint?
Cost-effectiveness
Powder coating offers lower charge rates compared to wet paint. Low costs arise from the automation process.?Such a procedure minimizes operational and labor costs. Also, there are minimal supervision and training conditions to operate. Material cost is cheaper due to the reusability of the material.
Performance
The lifespan in powder coating is greater than that of wet paint. Durability and resistance to corrosion are traits that enhance performance. Epoxies of a powdered coat contain impact strength. Also, abrasion resistance reduces physical damages such as;
Powder coating contains needed mechanical properties. Such qualities make them pliable, yielding to base materials.
Quality
The beauty in powder coating is higher than wet paint. Particles found in it align themselves eradicating uneven coatings. Such a property explains why powder coatings don’t drip. The non-dripping increases the uniformity of the paint. Also, retaining ability makes the layer appear brighter and fresher.
Safety
Wet paints are dangerous, flammable, and full of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Such qualities are harmful to humans and non-environmentally friendly. Moreover, the powder coatings lack solvents or VOC materials. Implying that its involvement lacks toxic chemicals.?The absence of VOCs maintains the ozone layer preventing exposure to deadly sun rays. Hence, powder coatings are acceptable in all Environmental Protection Agency.
