How to Choose Dietary Supplements Wisely by First Drawing a Real Vitamin

Let’s start with an interesting question. How would you draw a vitamin?

A few years ago, I might have drawn any kind of a shape representing a pill.

But, never again, and that has made all the difference in choosing the right supplement to prioritize my good health choices.

Importantly, what if your new view of a vitamin becomes the most important drawing you can do to maintain health? I know it did for me.

Don’t copy public images seen in TV ads with multicolored vitamins dancing happily like people or be confused by labels on bottles with unpronounceable words.

Don’t worry about the 13 essential kinds of vitamins because they all have common features.

Two reasons why vitamin content is important…

The purpose of a supplement is to overcome a deficiency in individual biochemistry for a long-term balance for two reasons:

  1. Modern agricultural and processing systems deplete many of the essential nutrients that our cells require for strong structure and function.
  2. Modern biosciences now show that cells need at least 100 nutrients in the proper balance and ratio to maintain, defend and repair healthy cells

So what is a vitamin?

A vitamin is an organic compound composed of three elements:

Carbon … Hydrogen … Oxygen

Different vitamins have different combinations of

Carbon … Hydrogen … Oxygen

A drawing of a real vitamin has a series of Carbon Molecules linked with Hydrogen Molecules linked with Oxygen Molecules

Their formulas show the molecular numbers of Carbon (C ) Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O)

Vitamin A — C20 H30 O

Vitamin E — C29 H50 O2

Vitamin B6 — C8 H11 O3 N

Closer Look at Vitamin C … Drawing — C6 H8 O6

Vitamin C is also known as Ascorbic Acid which acts as a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger that protects tissues, cell membranes, and DNA from oxidative damage, develops tissue, heals wounds and keeps immune system strong.

Ascorbic acid is found in nature as a part of a complete complex of phytonutrients that are known as natural Vitamin C mainly found in fruits and vegetables with recommendation to eat 5 to 7 servings daily.

Often, many people turn to vitamin supplements.

The reality is that most are synthetic formulations from a lab, not found in nature’s pharmacy. But many still claim to be “natural” since scientists have decided the synthetics are similar enough to their whole-food counterparts to be used in the same way.

The reality is that most are synthetic formulations from a lab, not found in nature’s pharmacy. But many still claim to be “natural” since scientists have decided the synthetics are similar enough to their whole-food counterparts to be used in the same way.

Synthetic Vitamin C is created by taking corn starch and breaking it down with heat, enzymes, acetone, and hydrochloric acid to make ascorbic acid.

You can question why bother about real whole-food plant-based vitamins because good health balance is not debatable.

How to Choose Dietary Supplements Wisely

Two Essentials and Good Advice

A supplement is an act of faith, regeneration of cells takes months.

One of the most important health decisions is the best dietary supplement for you and your family. Medical literature is full of controlled, double-blind clinical studies that show degenerative disease can be prevented or greatly reduced by improving diet through the addition of a dietary supplement.

But you want to make sure you are managing proper health control without wasting your time and hard-earned money.

It is never about special interest groups, marketing, discount retail stores, low cost, financial gain or uninformed guesses. It is not about replacing poor dietary habits.

Two Essential Supplements’ Criteria

  1. Provide a holistic balanced spectrum of nutrients for cellular metabolism that includes antioxidants, all vitamins, all minerals, amino acids, enzymes and co-factors to deliver these nutrients.
  2. Be bio-available at a molecular level to be absorbed and utilized with bonus inclusion of essential minerals. Note many high-potency multivitamins with rich vitamin concentrations lack important minerals.

General Advice about Supplementation Industry (A-E)

A. Choose a “pill from a mill” format only after investigating the intensive process of converting raw materials into bottled pills on a shelf … the manufacturing practices, bio-availability and composition.

There are thousands of vitamin pill suppliers but almost all of them buy their bulk powders from the same source (only a handful of manufacturers have the laboratory ability for extraction.)

B. Find out which extraction method pulled the nutrients out of plant sources: synthetic (non-plant sources), fermentation, solvent or gas.

C. Avoid synthetics of any vitamin. These are made in labs using chemicals and processes far removed from the natural world. Carbon-based coal tar or petroleum byproducts can be used as typical ingredients. Our bodies don’t recognize these compounds, treat them as toxins, and waste time and energy in removing them.

D. Read labels about the pill’s composition including inactive binders, fillers, preservatives and coatings.

E. Avoid taking massive doses of vitamins and minerals, especially the popular and cheap synthetic “vitamins” widely sold in discount retail stores. The human body also is not designed to consume excessive doses of vitamins and minerals, especially artificial ingredients.

D. Be specific in checking out the proven clinical effectiveness of your supplement in research studies. Make sure the studies are industry wide, not in-house specific endorsed by doctors on board. Access the National Library of Medicine database and search for specific ingredients and their clinical efficacy.

E. Manufacturers need to follow other important criteria (read labels):

…ensure top-quality raw materials (VCP) — Vendor Certification Program

…comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to maintain highest health standards — GMP certification

…ensure finished products adhere to quality standards of United States Pharmacopoeia (USP30) specifications

Currently, a variety of high density whole food liquid nutrition or super food concentrates made from vegetables or fruits are a growing marketplace trend because bio-sciences show how whole food extracts provide a range of anti-oxidants, natural vitamins and minerals, amino acids, enzymes and co-factors.

Of course, it’s always better to make your own juices.

FINAL CONSIDERATION

Measure the cost of supplements as a long-term investment in health. It is only a fraction of long term costs compared to a chronic disease. The lowest price should never determine what you buy. Several studies have shown that proper supplementation can dramatically reduce the burden of disease and the cost to manage it.

As a final statement, the dietary supplementation business has never been bigger — 75 billion dollars US annually; but, on the other hand, 500 billion dollars is spent on prescription drugs which treat symptoms but don’t address the actual causes of disease.

The good news remains that consumers can play an active role in preventing poor health conditions by working more closely with Nature’s brands of whole food phytonutrients.
