How to choose bonding metals for tungsten carbide?

Choice of bonded metals:

As bonded metal, the following conditions must be met:

1. The bonding metal has good wettability to carbides, and only liquid phase sintering can eliminate pores and densify the alloy.

2. The alloy composed of bonding metal and carbide has high strength. Although copper wets carbide, the alloy strength is low.

3. It does not chemically react with carbide during the sintering process to form harmful new phases.

4. The bonding metal can partially dissolve the carbide, form a good interface, and strengthen the bonding phase.

5. The bonding metal must have a relatively high melting point to ensure that the alloy has a certain high-temperature strength and hardness and meets the usage requirements.

Production practice shows that only the iron group metals iron, cobalt, and nickel are suitable, with cobalt being the best. The G in YG carbide, the most common and widely used type of carbide on the market, is cobalt.
