Offcuts are basically the left over bits of grass when we come to the end of a roll that may not be large enough for a complete garden installation. Free samples

When purchasing carpet and other floor coverings, it is customary to receive a free sample so that you can see and test the product for yourself. This is no different with artificial grass. Many of us are tactile people and when we want to buy a product we touch it, it’s all part of the buying process. Characteristics of artificial grass

The fabric of artificial grass is synthetic, i.e. man-made. The turf is made up of multiple strands of thin, yet hardwearing, plastic sewn through a latex backing. This backing is pre-punched to help water drain through the surface into the ground below. It is these perforations that prevent the build-up of surface water on artificial grass.

We use a variety of shades of green to create a realistic end effect; natural grass is not uniformly green. Many of our types of plastic grass also include a fake brown tufting, enhancing the natural look even further.

As mentioned above, we offer a selection of artificial grass to choose from, each giving a different look and feel. The pile heights range from 20mm in the most budget grass, to 40mm in the most luxurious. As you go up our range, the density of the grass also increases, providing extra cushioning under foot and comfort during use.

Common questions about artificial grass

What does it feel like?

As you would expect, plastic grass does not feel like natural grass, however it is not unpleasant at all. The grass tufts do not feel as soft as the real thing, but certainly fine to walk on in bare feet. Of course, seeing and feeling is believing! If you’d like to know what artificial grass feels like to definite, order some free samples – it’s what they’re there for after all. Is artificial grass child friendly?

Synthetic turf is an ideal surface for children to play on. It gives them a relatively soft surface to land on, and during the summer there is less chance of skinned knees from the dry soil and lawn. The drainage holes let the rain drain away into the soil. This means that children can go out and play, even during the rain if they want, without getting muddy. Plus, it means less muddy footprints in the house and no grass stains to try and wash out of their clothes. You can make artificial grass even more child-friendly, especially if you are going to install it under play equipment such as trampolines and climbing frames, by having shock pads installed underneath. This can increase the critical fall height to 3 meters.

Because artificial grass is so child friendly, it of course makes it a perfect surface for school playgrounds. Fake grass provides an all-weather, cushioned and aesthetically pleasing surface ideal for kids during general recreation, but also during sports play. What is the critical fall height?

Critical fall height is the height to which a surface is certified to be safe to fall on. Basically, if the critical fall height for a surface is 2m, then a person is protected from serious injury (within reason) to that height.

Can I have artificial grass if I have pets?

Pets like fake grass just as much as they like real grass. They will happily play, lounge around and do their business on the synthetic turf. One of the benefits of artificial grass is that it has a porous backing, allowing pet’s urine to drain through into the soil below. Faeces will need picking up as usual, but, if you wish, you can give the area a little wash, even using some eco-friendly detergent if you life. Artificial grass is stain resistant so you won’t have the little telltale signs of where your pooch’s favourite toilet spot is, and of course, no dead grass!

Is artificial grass safe for pets?

Artificial grass is absolutely safe for all animals. We’ve yet to meet a pet to complain to us about artificial grass over natural turf. With its soft, natural appearance artificial grass creates a comfortable environment for pets where they’ll have no problems… marking their territory.

When the inevitable mess is created, artificial grass is exceptionally easy to clean. It can simply be hosed down, with the latex backing allowing urine and small amounts of solid waste to simply wash away. Larger waste can be removed just like on any natural lawn, before being washed down. Artificial grass also carries the advantage of being suitable for light detergents. We always recommend using an environmentally friendly variety, which can help to maintain a hygienic environment for kids and animals alike.

Should you wish to purchase the fake grass alone, without using our installation services, you will want to know how to lay artificial grass. Even if you are using our installation services, you might be interested to learn what the process it.

Before you lay synthetic grass you need to prepare the surface. When replacing a natural lawn, the first step is to remove the existing turf to a depth of between 2 to 3 inches. If you have poor draining soil, a 3 inch base is required, whereas free draining soil only requires a 2 inch base.

Once the turf is removed, a geotextile weed membrane is put down over the soil, then the membrane is covered by Type 1, or MOT (crushed stone). The weed membrane laid prior, stops the stones from sinking into the soil and weeds from pushing through. Once the type 1 is evenly spread and compacted, it’s blinded off with a thin layer of sharp sand. The sharp sand is then compacted and smoothed to create a perfectly level surface, before a second layer of weed membrane is pinned into position with galvanised nails.

Next, the plastic turf is laid out in the space and left to settle and flatten for an hour or two. Once flat, the grass is cut to shape. Where two lengths of grass are used, they can be joined using joining tape and glue. The final step is simply to trim the edges and nail the grass into place with more 6 inch nails. After care

To make the most of your artificial grass and ensure it has a long life, you will need to take care of it. Synthetic turf doesn’t need nearly as much maintenance as real grass. For a start, there is of course no need to mow it. You don’t need to use water to keep it green, and fertilisers will be a thing of the past. This saves you both time and money.

Artificial grass maintenance is simple, all you need to do is to regularly remove any debris such as leaves and other organic matter, and sweep the grass with a stiff broom. Leaving organic matter to decompose creates soil, which allows the growth of moss and weeds, and stops your lawn from looking its best.

Artificial grass cleaning guide

Should you wish to clean your plastic grass, you may do so with some environmentally friendly detergent mixed with plenty of warm water. You might want to wash your artificial grass if you have a number of pets using the lawn to do their business, and if the grass is used by children playing. Little kids do like picking things up and putting them in their mouths, keeping the grass clean will keep any germs to a minimum.
