Deborah Dzifah Tamakloe is a child welfare advocate with over five years of experience in non-profit consulting, research, and program development. She is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at Dalhousie University, where she also works as a research assistant.
But before all that, she was a student and passionate child welfare advocate who needed new ways to attract the attention and support of notable non-profit organizations who could help her in her quest to improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).
Here’s what she had to say about her author's journey.
How many books have you authored to date?
4
What were you doing when you decided “I’m going to write my first book”? Or, at least, “I’m going to attempt to write this book”?
I was still a student when I wrote my first book. I wanted to raise awareness about the struggles of young people in care and how society can help them. I felt strongly that sharing my story in writing could help me diversify my advocacy strategies, and indeed, it did.
How did you carve out time to write your book(s)?
It was driven by passion, so I wrote whenever I felt inspired. There was nothing like a rigid writing routine for me. I was able to complete it within a year.
What unexpected difficulties did you encounter while writing your book and how did you overcome them?
I never encountered any difficulty except fighting with myself over my readiness to share my vulnerability with the world. Looking back now, I am certain that being vulnerable enabled people to understand the issues I presented, so they could relate and decide to be a part of my journey through partnerships and the like.
What opportunities have you enjoyed because you’re a published author?
领英推荐
I’ve been involved in strong advocacy works with notable NGOs like OAfrica and built strong connections.
Any tips for overcoming self-doubt and staying motivated?
Just know that your voice and story matter and they need to be heard. Always start unprepared, shaking, and doubting because only by “doing” would you gain mastery.
What advice would you offer to a corporate professional/business owner contemplating writing a nonfiction book to amplify their impact and enhance their personal brand?
Write because you want to impact, and the rest will follow.
Any other tips or words of wisdom you'd like to share with aspiring authors?
Keep writing and keep improving
