‘They filmed me without consent’: the ugly side of #kindness videos

The Guardian reported this week on the rise of some social media users who are building a following through ‘feelgood’ videos, in which, for instance, they give flowers to a stranger.? Or pay for a stranger's grocery shopping without consent. The stranger then becomes their clickbait.?

Is it kindness? Or is it for personal gain? ??

In many countries, public photography and videography, and publication of such, is protected under freedom of speech and the press. Your consent is not (legally) required, and it can even be done against your express wishes. This can also be true if you are on private property but are visible from a public area.

We find the content veering on the side of exploitation.? What do you think?

Do you think we should be worried?

For years, there has been worldwide fear of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impending takeover of the world… who knew that it would start with the world of art and literature. ??

After months of dominating the internet with its AI image generator Dall-E 2, OpenAI is back in everyone’s social media feeds thanks to ChatGPT - a chatbot made using the company's technology GPT-3.

While it can be fun to use OpenAI’s years of research to get an AI to write bad stand-up comedy scripts or answer questions about your favourite celebrities, its power lies in its speed and understanding of complicated matters.

Where we could spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article on quantum mechanics, ChatGPT can produce a well-written alternative in seconds.

Is it safe? Artificial intelligence and ethical concerns go together like fish and chips or Batman and Robin. When you put technology like this in the hands of the public, the teams that make them fully know the many limitations and concerns.

Because the system is trained largely using words from the internet, it can pick up on the internet’s biases, stereotypes and general opinions. That means you’ll occasionally find jokes or stereotypes about certain groups or political figures depending on what you ask it.

How could Marketers benefit from using Chat GPT:

  1. Chatbots: ChatGPT can be used to build conversational chatbots for customer service, lead generation, and e-commerce.
  2. Content generation: ChatGPT can be used to generate personalized and engaging content, such as product descriptions, email subject lines, and social media posts.
  3. Voice assistants: Marketers can use ChatGPT to develop voice assistants for smart speakers and other devices, providing customers with an interactive, hands-free experience.
  4. AI copywriting: ChatGPT can be used to write compelling ad copy, product descriptions, and other marketing materials, helping to increase conversions and engagement.
  5. Predictive analysis: ChatGPT can be used to analyze large amounts of customer data, providing marketers with insights into customer behaviour and preferences, which can inform targeted marketing campaigns.

Overall, ChatGPT has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of marketing efforts, making it an exciting tool for marketers to keep an eye on in the future.

Our key criticism? Tone of voice…. It’s not capable of capturing & delivering accurate tones…. yet!

Bring back the good 'ol fashioned photos for goodness sake!

Good news for Instagram purists – Instagram chief Adam Mosseri says that the platform has gone too hard on pushing videos, and will look to make photos more of a focus once again in 2023.

Mosseri made the remark as part of his weekly Q&A series, conducted in his IG Stories.

As per Mosseri:

“I think we were overfocused on video in 2022 and pushed ranking too far, and basically showed too many videos and not enough photos. We’ve since balanced, so things like how often someone likes photos versus videos, and how often someone comments on photos versus videos, are roughly equal, which is a good sign that things are balanced.”

Mosseri further notes that photos will remain a key focus for the app, and that maintaining the right balance in this respect will be key.

AI Dictating more than 15% of IG Posts

?? ALGORITHM INSIGHT! Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg noted that just over 15% of Instagram content was being delivered via its AI recommendation engine.

And we’ll expect to see this ‘more than double’ by the end of 2023.

Will that extend to Stories too? Probably.

How do you feel about seeing Stories from people and pages that IG’s algorithm thinks you might also like?

Are you taking part in the NFT Contest in Nike's Web3 Venue .Swoosh?
Are you taking part in the NFT Contest in Nike's Web3 Venue .Swoosh?

Nike's latest excursion into the world of NFT sneakers, jerseys and other virtual apparel for metaverse avatars is a design contest aimed at expanding its .Swoosh community.

The contest, which runs through Jan. 29, offers four winners $5,000 prizes and the ability to collaborate on a sneaker with a Nike designer.

If the designs are included in the YourForce1 collection drop the winners will get a co-creation contract that could include the right to collect royalties on every sale and resale of their design.

Ummm, yes, please!!!?

Nike is far ahead of other major brands in any industry — not just fashion — in making its virtual products desirable enough to rake in a profit.

Dune Analytics revealed Nike was the top retail brand in terms of NFT sales and revenue. Nike pulled in $186 million in primary sales and royalties from secondary sales of its kicks NFTs, with sale earnings and resale royalties each accounting for half. That was more than double the revenues of the rest of the top 10 combined — which included brands like Gucci, Budweiser and Adidas.

Stay ahead of the trends with LinkedIn's Recommendations

Looking to make LinkedIn more of a focus for your brand?

LinkedIn says that its users viewed 22% more feed updates in 2022, year-over-year, forming part of the ‘record levels of engagement’ the app keeps reporting within its quarterly updates.

  • Like Facebook, LinkedIn will generate clickable link previews when you add a link into your post text within the composer, which will remain linked even if you delete the link text. This can make your updates look cleaner
  • LinkedIn has added a range of templates and customization tools for posts, which could help you create more standout updates. Some of these still look fairly generic, but you can check them out for yourself by tapping the ‘Use a Template’ option within the list composer
  • LinkedIn has added a range of new analytics tools over the past year, for both business and individuals, including new insights into how employees are sharing and re-sharing company updates. Worth familiarizing yourself with the latest tools on this front

There’s a range of creative and engaging ways to approach LinkedIn, and if that’s where your target market is active, it may well be the best place to build a presence and connect with a broader network.
