How Will ChatGPT Change Freelancing? My Predictions for 2023

How Will ChatGPT Change Freelancing? My Predictions for 2023

AI in the world of freelancing is, contrary to popular belief, nothing new. Many freelance writers have been relying on the likes of Copy.ai or Jasper.ai since last year, backed up by Grammarly and other plagiarism-checking tools that guarantee original, grammatically correct, and quality content for clients. The only difference with ChatGPT is that the team behind it got out ahead of the media curve quickly, so now anyone with a smartphone is aware that this technology exists in 2023.

ChatGPT is impressive, no doubt, and will continue to refine its abilities to write original content, generate ideas, code apps and websites, code chatbots, and the list goes on. I believe that by summer 2023, the tool will be able to write a perfectly acceptable product description that is plagiarism-free and able to be used on a website.

Which has every freelancer panicked – what does that mean for us?

Allow me to explain my predictions with ChatGPT and why freelancers will, in fact, not be replaced by this new AI technology.

The One Thing AI Can’t Do

AI is will be able to do everything in the next three-years. Those who doubt its ability to advance to that point in just a few years (or months) are wrong, in my opinion. It will be able to perfect anything that has predictability or a formula, plain and simple. The only thing it will never be able to do is tap into the spiritual connectivity that every human has access to presently. That means it will never be able to come up with the creativity, imagination, or foresight that comes from having a divine soul.

The role of the freelancer, therefore, will shift dramatically by the end of 2023. Here are my 3 predictions for what we are going to see:

My 3 AI-Freelancing Predictions

1.????From Writing to Editing: ChatGPT will be able to write a high-level blog soon (I am using the example of freelance writing, but this goes for any industry – graphics and design, coding and so forth). Freelancers will shift from being the ones writing the meat of the article, to the editors that come in, move things around, add in references, jokes, and sayings, and sprinkle in just enough human empathy and emotion that the article feels real again. Not to mention, Google has stated that AI-generated blogs stacked on websites goes against its guidelines , so human intervention to change the article just enough is going to still be required.

2.????Unique AI Expertise: Since freelancers are one of the first groups of the economy to be using and deploying ChatGPT in the running of their business, freelancers are going to be seen as individuals with AI expertise one-to-two years from now. All the businesses and sectors ignoring AI will come to rely on us, probably one year from now, to be the ones that use the ChatGPT tool to fulfill all the business’ online marketing needs. We often forget that there are millions of business owners not sitting on LinkedIn every day, commenting on these articles. They’re going to be forced to use AI at some point, which is where a new opportunity for freelancers to offer services as being ‘AI-friendly’ to these clients will come into the picture.

3.????Elimination of Low-Level Freelancing Products: I predict AI is going to do away with the low-level freelancing services that many people are charging $10 to $20 for right now on Fiverr. AI will be able to replicate these services, even without human intervention, quickly, which means more business personnel are going to use the tool to get their small $20 orders done on their own. They are not, however, going to use ChatGPT to complete a multi-thousand-dollar project that has milestones, concepts, briefs, and revisions bundled into the deal. Corporations only know how to operate in a bloated structure, where one manager tells another manager, who tells another manager, who tells an account executive, who tells an accountant coordinator… you get my point here. These corporations will still need to work with humans, who no doubt deploy ChatGPT for some part of the project, in order to keep their executives and stakeholders happy.

What Does This Mean for You, the Freelancer?

I implore all freelancers reading this to, first, understand that AI is not your enemy. It’s going to automate so many monotonous and redundant parts of freelancing. It’s going to help you avoid burnout, and it’s going to give you your time back. Embrace the change, embed the AI in your business now, and get out ahead of the fear so clients see you as someone who is pro-future.

Position yourself as a freelancer that is interested in higher level projects, someone who works for no less than $100 on more complicated arrangements. Start practicing using AI-generators and going in and cleaning up the work that they create. You can even open your own Fiverr gigs (I have done this) where you publicly state that you are going to be using AI in the completion of the service.

Remember that more millionaires are made during recessions than periods of prosperity . Major market shifts like this create areas of opportunity for whoever is willing to pursue it. Don’t let fear of the unknown, of change, stop you from missing out on what I believe will be one of the most lucrative times in your life to take advantage of a brand-new technology that is going to change everything.

I don’t have a problem with using ChatGPT, but it’s not completely reliable. As a freelancer, I think we’re going to need to take some time to fact-check our work before submitting it, just to make sure we don’t provide bad information. (Try asking ChatGPT for a listing of famous people from your hometown. Three of nine listed in my case have nothing to do with my hometown.)

Sincerely, the invention of AI technology is kinda scary but, on the other hand (from a good-deep view) one can still take advantage of this technology before it's too late. Master how to use it to generate content while you become good at adding creativity, imagination, or foresight (human touch) to the content... I wish all freelance writers GOOD SUCCESS! #freelance #ai #freelancer #writingtips
