The fashion industry is navigating?economic uncertainty, rising costs and inflation, impacting both retail and consumer behaviour worldwide.
While McKinsey’s?State of Fashion 2025?report highlights a cyclical slowdown, it also points to a significant shift: consumers are becoming more ethical, sustainability-conscious and selective in their purchases.
Global fashion markets are feeling the pressure. While?luxury and non-luxury markets in the US and Europe?continue to see marginal year-on-year growth, the post-2021 slowdown is evident.
Understanding Consumer Trends by Generation
With a challenging retail landscape,?understanding generational preferences is central to keeping one’s finger on the pulse:
???Baby Boomers (52+ years old)?– This group?spends more on fashion than younger generations, prioritising quality and in-person shopping experiences. While they are adapting to digital platforms, usability is critical.
???Gen X (45-60 years old)?– Known as?hybrid shoppers, they value convenience, loyalty programs, and a mix of online and offline shopping. Sustainability matters to them—but only if the price is right.
???Millennials (28-43 years old)?– This?experience-driven generation?is influenced by?reviews, social proof, and influencers. Subscription models, rental fashion, and curated experiences appeal to them.
???Gen Z (13-28 years old)?– This?mobile-first, social media-driven?generation prefers shopping via platforms like?TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. They prioritize convenience, fast shipping, and free returns.?They are not particularly brand loyal but are drawn to affordability, sustainability, and unique fashion pieces—which explains their love for thrifting.
Looking Ahead
For brands and retailers,?staying ahead means adapting to these evolving trends. From?rethinking digital strategies?to?aligning with sustainability values, success in fashion will require agility and innovation.
Collaboration will also play a critical role in shaping the industry’s future.?Events like the Global Sourcing Expo serve as a hub for knowledge sharing, problem-solving, and fostering industry connections. By working together, businesses can?navigate challenges, explore new opportunities and build a more resilient fashion industry.
