How ___ Will Change Your Newsletter Game

How ___ Will Change Your Newsletter Game

?We use stories to stop time and indulge ourselves in novels and other media.?

The best thing a story does is to grab your attention in the first sentence to keep you reading.

Just like an email newsletter.?

Grabbing and holding a reader’s attention is the most important factor in increasing your open rate.?

Today we'll talk about why storytelling works for increasing your open rates!

Before I show you how to use stories, let me tell you a story:

“The snow in the mountains was melting and Bunny had been dead for several weeks before we came to understand the gravity of our situation.”

This sentence got me back into reading.?

I was in a reading slump for about 2 years and was lucky if I could finish a book a year. The hardest part of a story for me is the buildup.

If the buildup doesn't hook me I won’t make it to the climax and I end up putting the book down.

I experienced this same slump throughout 2021.

That is until one of my friends recommended to me a book called “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt.?

Thank god that the book wasn’t another young adult fantasy filled with werewolves and vampires, is what I said.

This was my first Dark-Academia Book and wasn't sure it was right for me.

Then I read that first sentence.

Then the next and then another chapter, I was hooked!

?I ended up finishing the book in 3 days.?

Every free moment I had I was reading this book!?

In the drive-through line at McDonald's’s, waiting during my doctor’s appointment every free moment I had was consumed by this beautiful story that Donna Tartt had crafted.

I was in love with this book and craved more!

I went on to read the other Donna Tartt books including The Goldfinch. The Little Friend, and the Christmas Pageant.?

I continued to crave books, and I am now out of my reading slump.?

After reading this book, my whole approach to writing emails changed.?

The most important thing to do when writing a newsletter is to take the "Secret History" approach.?

Grab and hold the reader’s attention all the way to your CTA.

?Make them excited to read more and more!

Have your readers share your newsletters with their friends

Then those friends share the newsletter with their friends and the cycle continues!

If you can’t do that, your newsletter isn’t worth reading.

There are many ways to tell a story whether it’s detailing?

-the hero’s journey

-a rags to riches story

-or even a story of rebirth!

There are 3 ways to use storytelling to increase your email open rates.?

1: Using headlines to express concern

Headlines are the reason your audience keeps reading so feel free to get creative!

Using emotions like concern and worry are the best ways to get your email opened.

Some examples include:

“I need help”

“I’ve failed you”

“You’re not worth it”

These are some emails in my “promotions” folder that made me want to keep reading.?

Being a copywriter I read a lot of email newsletters a day.

?I see what’s working for them and headlines that raise concern have a better open rate.

If you want to start using this, run A/B tests to see which kind of headlines work best.

2: The “Rags to Riches” Story

Success stories are some of the best things to use in your emails.

?In my previous article, we discussed how people like to see other people succeed!

Success stories show that a person who used your product or service had a positive experience.?

One of my favorite success story headlines I have read was:

?“From $0 to $200,000 in 12 months: the truth about solo growth” on Medium by Ryan Darani.

I read this article often when I started my business, and I shared this article with other up-and-coming copywriters I connected to.

This type of storytelling works best for coaches?and people in the self-help and wellness industry because people want to be better and be healthier.

3: The Hero’s Journey

This is the most popular type of storytelling, and it is for a reason.?

Think of any Disney movie:

-The Lion King

-Cinderella

Star Wars (yes they are Disney now)?

They all revolve around the hero's journey!?

It’s a story about trials and tribulations and rebirth.?

A story about finding who you are and overcoming any obstacles.?

That’s why Disney movies are always big successes!?

They have the hero’s journey down to T.

Make the hero’s journey all about you!?

This is a time to talk about you and your experiences.

Tell the story of your hero’s journey!

?Who you are, what you have been through, how you have grown and how you can help!

Being personal is a good thing!

?The more people can relate to you the more they will subscribe and follow you, read your emails, and watch content about you.?

Storytelling is single-handedly the best way to keep people reading. If you aren’t sure where to start, I recommend Jill Wise and Joshua Boswell.?

Their emails are filled with stories that captivate you to the end.

Are you looking for a copywriter who can tell these stories? Someone who can increase your email open rates??
