How to change Roles within your organization?

Here is what worked for me:

1. INITIATIVES: Take internal initiatives within your organization. These could be volunteering, activities, projects, initiatives which are over and above the work you do. Leadership talks, community work, productivity projects, POCs, Pilots, job shadowing are examples. Job shadowing people within the organization for the role you want can go a long way. Volunteer for work in your area of interest with start-ups. Start Initiatives/Projects outside the Organization. Picking up volunteer or freelance projects in the area you want to move in can also help you make the transition.

2. NETWORKING: You need to know the right people within the organization, but more importantly they should know you. Start with Internal networking & then slowly start to network outside your organization. Meeting new people in the organization, being a part of meetings, conferences, training programs are good ways to network. Network within the organization with colleagues across levels. Network outside the organization with industry folks. Speaking to people who have made a similar career transition can also help. Meeting & speaking to people working in the role you want can help you get both the knowledge & also let you know about the skills you need.

3. PERSONAL BRAND: Let your work speak for you. People should approach you for your work. Help people around you with the skills you have. If there is an important project in your area of work your name should be the top of the mind recall for everyone.

4. SKILLS: Develop deep expertise in your area of interest or work. Attend training programs, workshops, conferences & certifications within & outside the organization. Picking up professional qualifications & studying further can also help.

5. SAVE TIME & MONEY for the organization. Improve Processes & Systems & save time/money for the organization. Come up with research papers/reports that can help the organization

These simple things helped me change roles in various organizations.

I realized it is not very difficult to make career transitions. It took me roughly 2-3 months to make a successful career transition within my organization. It is however important to find the common thread between what you are doing currently and what you want to do.
