Not How Change Happens ...

I've been meaning to write about this for a couple of weeks now, but didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I hope these entrepreneurs will try to see the bigger picture and make suitable adjustments.

Right now there's a positive global trend of people who feel that change is needed, but it's still not clear how that change is going to happen exactly. Once this urge awakens in a person there is no way back. This impulse will have to find its satisfaction. It's simply a natural process.

At the moment it's coming at us in a negative way. We can all see and feel that there's no place in the world that isn't suffering from some kind of instability.

These are the current factors helping us develop forward:

1. An internal pressure in all humans demanding change.

2. A crumbling world.

3. An uncertain future.

And as strange as it may sound, these things are enough to push us to agree that a change is needed. The next step will be figuring out what we want to change and how. But when it comes to building processes you can't just jump from one thing to the next - especially when dealing with social / human processes.

We have a desire to make the world a better place, to make our relationships more convenient and beneficial - simply a desire for a better and decent life. And this is where the main problem we suffer from begins, which is a lack of definition and understanding of what our purpose is here. And this is precisely where all the negative lack of connection between us comes from.

The Missing Link

So as long as we don't understand our purpose for being here, and the connection between all human beings, then all our demands for changes will only be cosmetic and external.

I don't like giving negative examples, but here is this company in London called Linkup who are spraying sidewalks with their #juststopscrolling slogan and think that will change something in our behavior. Last week they put on these scary purple suits covering every aspect of what makes them human to promote their message. It's quite a weird costume for a company that wants to promote meaningful face to face human connection.

Here are their two posts:

We're back to the streets of London today making our mark (quite literally) with our Just Stop Scrolling campaign

The Just Stop Scrolling campaign

Sorry but this isn't how change is going to happen. The truth is that's it's very naive to think you can force people to change. It doesn't work that way at all.

We should rather start trying to answer a few questions that will help focus our thoughts and actions in a positive direction, for example:

  • What do we want to change?
  • Who do we want to change?
  • How are social human changes realized?

It will take some time before we can focus ourselves on what the true spirit of change is. Meaning make the transition from focusing on external things like politics, work and artificial intelligence. To an internal change of the person him/herself, how confident he feels about life. But we have to start talking about how this internal change will happen, because it's the foundation for every single aspect of our lives.

Agreed! These actions are just as useless as standard change management "at scale" in large corporations.
