They operate based on the principle of centrifugal force, which is the outward force experienced by an object moving in a circular path. Here's a basic explanation of how centrifugal pumps work:
1. Impeller: The main component of a centrifugal pump is the impeller, which is typically a rotating disk with curved blades or vanes attached to it. When the impeller rotates, it imparts kinetic energy to the fluid by accelerating it radially outward.
2. Inlet: Fluid enters the pump through the inlet or suction port. The shape and design of the inlet, along with the impeller's rotation, create a low-pressure zone at the center of the impeller, causing fluid to be drawn into the pump.
3. Acceleration: As the fluid enters the pump, it encounters the rotating impeller blades. The high-speed rotation of the impeller blades accelerates the fluid and directs it towards the outer edges of the impeller.

4. Centrifugal Force: As the fluid moves radially outward along the curved path of the impeller blades, it experiences centrifugal force, which pushes it outward. This centrifugal force causes the fluid to increase in velocity and pressure as it moves through the impeller.
5. Diffuser or Volutes: After leaving the impeller, the high-velocity fluid enters a diffuser or volute, which is a stationary casing surrounding the impeller. The diffuser or volute is designed to convert kinetic energy into pressure energy by gradually decelerating the fluid and redirecting its flow direction from radial to axial.
6. Discharge: The pressurized fluid exits the pump through the discharge port, where it is sent into the piping system to be transported to its intended destination. The pressure generated by the pump depends on factors such as the impeller design, rotational speed, and fluid properties.
7. Sealing and Bearings: Centrifugal pumps often include sealing mechanisms (such as mechanical seals) to prevent fluid leakage along the pump shaft, as well as bearings to support the rotating shaft and minimize friction.
