How to Celebrate New Years Eve If You Are Not a Night Owl

Some of us are morning people.? I fit into that category.? I am up about 5:00 AM to exercise.? The downside is I am ready for bed at 9:00 PM, sometimes 10:00.? This makes celebrating New Years Eve (NYE) a challenge.? My wife and I have found some clever solutions.

?

Even if you are a night person, NYE can be challenging.? Here’s why:? You meet up with friends.? Cocktails are followed by dinner, often at 7:00 or 8:00 PM.? You are done at 10:00 at the latest.? You have two hours to fill until the ball drops.? More drinking often fills the time.? It’s midnight!? Everyone cheers, buy they don’t go home.? You stay around for another hour or two, then get behind the wheel of a car.? What could possibly go wrong?

?

As early risers, we came up with some good alternatives:

When we lived in San Francisco, we put on a NYE dinner party for friends.? At 9:00 PM we announced it was New Years in New York. (3 hour time difference.)? People put on paper hats and blew paper horns. (Yes, really) but there wasn’t much enthusiasm.? At 10:00 we got everyone’s attention again, announcing New Years in Chicago.? We got more participation this time.? At 11:00 we announced New Years in Denver, because they are on Mountain Time.? Now people are getting into the spirit!? When we turned the TV to a local news channel at 11:45 PM in San Francisco and did the countdown, we had a great celebration around the table.? Why?? They had already practiced three times!? We might be early risers, but all the excitement kept us going.

?

Here is the “early to bed” option.

?

Midnight in London is 7:00 PM in New York, accounting for the five hour time difference.? For the past few years we have invited dinner guests on NYE with a 6:00 PM arrival for drinks.? Everyone is settled in around the fireplace.? At 6:45 PM we use the BBC Sounds app on the iPhone to get one of the BBC stations.? (The Radio app on your phone can get other foreign stations too.)? The station has it’s people in Trafalgar Square doing the countdown.? At 7:00 PM NY time it is midnight, London time.? Everyone around the fireplace cheers!? We head into dinner.? The evening follows the same timing as any other dinner party.

?

In 2024 we took a Christmas Cruise on Cunard’s flagship, Queen Mary 2.? The voyage included Christmas and New Years.? They celebrated NYE in the Queens Room (ballroom) with an orchestra and a countdown on a projection screen.? It was a high energy event.

?

Earlier in the evening we passed the Golden Lion pub, another venue onboard.? We were surprised it was packed!? Standing room only!? They had a projection screen showing a UK TV station filming NYE in Trafalgar Square, even though it was 7:00 PM onboard.? They mus have some passengers who are early risers too.

?

You can celebrate NYE on your terms.? You simply need to be creative!
