How to celebrate International Woman’s Day

Happy International Woman’s Day.
Today could be a great day to show the really important women in your life that they matter to you.
How do you do that?
One of the skills we learn using Nonviolent Communication is to share specifically what we appreciate about someone using very clear observations (not projections or analysis!) and to say what difference that makes to US. So gratitude isn’t just about 'praise', instead it is about connection and sharing. Women (all of us actually) thrive in this connection and appreciation.
And maybe there is some kind of practical way that you would like to acknowledge the difference a special female partner, colleague or friend has made in your life on this powerful day?
So I’d like to tell you about an opportunity to empower Palestinian women leaders that you could directly contribute to in honour of the phenomenal women (who already have it all) in your life.
UN Secretary-General, António Guterres said that "Achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and the greatest human rights challenge in our world."
As you probably know, women in Palestine are a highly disadvantaged sector of Palestinian society. The unstable political and socio-economic realities they face leave long lasting detrimental effects on women’s wellbeing and their capacity to respond to life effectively.
Palestinian women in positions of leadership need direct support to bring their voices to the table, to really embrace leadership positions in their community, and to promote gender equality in their society.
So a pilot project is underway that will introduce women already in positions of leadership to the skills of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), peaceful negotiations and Convergent Facilitation (a technique I will be talking more about in upcoming articles).
I’m really excited about being involved in this life changing pilot project because I know the impact that learning to evolve my own communication skills has had on my personal and professional relationships. So being in a position to gift this knowledge forward to women that can help enact deeper levels of social change lights me up.
Some of the content for the workshop includes:
- Inner freedom: being able to choose a response based on needs
- Building blocks of dialogue, including across differences
- Working for transformation without recreating the past
- Collaborative decision making in groups (including Convergent Facilitation)
- Understanding nonviolence as combining courage, truth, and love
Sounds fantastic right! Women who are already in leadership positions across various community projects will be targeted to ensure a significant positive difference in Palestinian communities can be realised.
Together with a great team of elite social change professionals including Jacqueline Wechsler, Miki Kashtan and Dr Amal Hadweh that each have an impressive string of qualifications and achievements in the areas of women’s and humanitarian rights, I’ll be helping to facilitate a four day intensive training from 12-15 April, 2018 in Palestine. The ongoing support for the women will include a 12 months program with the facilitators and peer group networking.
You can read all about the full workshop program here if you want to know more.
Now getting back to International Women’s Day…. if you are inspired by the potential of this program, and are looking for that perfect meaningful way to acknowledge a woman in your life, why not make a contribution on her behalf towards the crowd-funding for this project? We really need your support to make this happen and what better way to acknowledge someone in your life in a heartfelt way? https://www.gofundme.com/PalestinianProject Check out, donate and share the page - please.
