How a Cardboard which was a Pizza went on to become a Pizza again? -A Story & Lesson from Dominos…
Some of you may know this story, how Domino's started and remained successful for a long time before it hit bottom after the IPO. In an interview with the CNBC, an executive of the company summarized how its problems began when lots of individual 'smart' ideas were implemented over a period of time – one team messed with the sauce, other with the cheese and one other with the crust- all with good intentions of saving cost and time. All of these 'silo'incremental approaches did save cost but collectively they went on to create one huge mess- a pizza which tasted like a cardboard, especially, at a time when the company was on an all-out war with a similar fresh pizza maker. Luckily, for them they did realize/admit their mistake, and went back to making pizza-eventually, at its peak (post 2010), the company had delivered a staggering 3600% growth in stock value.Domino's later morphed into a tech company making pizzas. Today, it is testing AI and autonomous vehicles in a bid to retain its over 30% share in pizzas ordered online.Hopefully, this time as a collective unit, and not a rinse & repeat...
Lesson learnt- Don’t get excited when your teams are running hundreds of martial art colored projects (from yellow to green to black), because, collectively they may be making a cardboard- i.e. destroying value...
Disclaimer:I neither own stocks or even like Domino's pizza...
