How Can You Use Crime Data in Your Work?

Chilean architect Allan Clark uses crime statistics as a guide to build houses that discourage crimes through architectural design.?

House break-ins and express kidnappings are two of the leading crimes affecting single-family homes in Chile. However, homes built by Clark have not been broken into, even in neighborhoods affected by these crimes. The use of strategic lighting and optimal garage door opening speeds are some of the elements that have prevented break-ins.?

Clark also says that as crime evolves, so do his designs, adapting to changes in the way that crimes are committed.?

“Security is one of the three most urgent demands of the population,” he told InSight Crime. “The more information there is, the more elements we have to help prevent crimes of opportunity in homes.”

Clark said his design methodology can be extended to public spaces and other countries in the region as a means of preventing crime in cities. He highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships for collecting data and implementing innovative projects.?
