How can you train your dog to reliably come back when called?

Training your dog to reliably come back when called isn't just about commands. It’s about trust, safety, and love—wrapped up in a single, powerful word: Come.

Step 1: The Foundation—Make Coming Back Awesome

Dogs don’t think like us. They won’t come back because it’s “polite” or because they feel guilty. They need a reason, and that reason has to be YOU.

  • Start with their favorite treat. We mean, the treat. The one they’d climb mountains for. Every time your dog comes back, make it rain chicken, cheese, or whatever makes their tail go turbo.
  • Be their hype squad. When they’re running toward you, cheer like they just won gold at the Olympics. Happy voice, big smile, maybe even a little dance—make them feel like a superstar.

Step 2: Practice at Home First

If your dog can’t come to you in the living room, they won’t do it at the park.

  • Start indoors. Call them from a short distance. Say their name, followed by "come" in a joyful tone. Reward immediately when they do.
  • Use a long leash outdoors. Give them room to explore but still stay in control. When they wander, call them back. Reward like crazy when they come.

Step 3: Never Use "Come" for Something Negative

Imagine you’re a kid at recess, and every time someone calls your name, it’s because you’re in trouble. Would you come running?

If you’re about to do something they won’t love—like trimming nails, taking them to the vet, or ending playtime—don’t call “come.” Go to them instead.

Step 4: The Magic of the Recall Game

Make recall training fun! Here’s how:

  1. Get a friend or family member.
  2. Stand at opposite ends of the room (or yard).
  3. Take turns calling your dog back and forth. Every time they come, they get a treat and lots of praise.

It’s a game to them, and practice for you.

Step 5: Patience and Repetition (and Patience Again)

There will be days when they ignore you. Maybe they spot a squirrel, or maybe the wind smells like adventure. Stay calm. Practice more. Remember: dogs aren’t robots. They’re little hearts on four legs, trying to understand what you want.

Training your dog to come back when called isn’t about control—it’s about connection. It’s about knowing that, no matter how far they wander, they’ll always choose to run back to you.

Because to them, you’re home.?
