How can you prevent your skin from drying in the winter?

Ho ho ho!!! It’s that time of the year when we welcome Santa Claus for Christmas and dry skin for winter. The cold months of winter not only affect our health but can especially wreak havoc on our skin. Your skin can become dehydrated as a result of the harsh winter winds, dry indoor heat, low humidity levels, and cold air. Your face, hands, feet, and other exposed areas of skin may all start to look much less radiant than usual as a result of this.

Hands may be red, and rough at this time of the year, and your skin may feel uncomfortable and itchy. The epidermal cells present in our skin are cemented together by a lipid-rich glue, that makes the cells flat, and smooth, and holds them in place. When the glue becomes loose due to sun damage, excessive cleaning, scrubbing, or underlying medical conditions — or by the low humidity of winter and the drying effects of indoor heat — water loss increases. Roughness, flaking, itching, cracking, and occasionally a burning sensation are the results.

So, is dry skin in the winter unavoidable? Absolutely not. Although the cold and harsh winter will affect the skin’s moisture content, you can take a few simple steps to prevent your skin from drying out in the winter.

  • In the winter, use a humidifier. Set it at about 60%, which should be enough to refill the epidermis' top layer.
  • Take shorter baths of 5-10 minutes to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. Use lukewarm water in place of hot water for bathing.
  • Limit the use of soaps and when necessary, use soaps or cleansers with high moisturizing properties. Avoid all kinds of scented and alcohol-containing products that can take away the skin’s natural oils.
  • Avoid using washcloths, scrubbing brushes, and bath sponges. Make sure to use gentler ones if you don't want to completely give them up. For the same reason, pat or blot the skin dry with a towel rather than rubbing it.
  • After taking a shower or washing your hands, moisturize your skin right away. When your skin is still damp, this helps seal in moisture by patching the spaces between your skin cells. Try keeping a bottle of moisturizer next to your sink and keeping a travel-size moisturizer with you when you’re on the go. Also, overnight moisturizing works wonders to replenish your skin.
  • Avoid scratching at all times! The itch of your dry skin can typically be controlled by a moisturizer. To soothe itchiness, you can also apply a cold compress or pack.
  • Do not forget to use sunscreen even in the winter since the Sun’s ultraviolet rays can still harm your skin in winter and worsen its condition.
