I could write a book on how leadership failed in one of the most successful and lucrative states in the country. But it would be a disservice not to honor the humans that rise to the occasion when given the opportunity to take care of their fellow neighbors.

Despite the terrible news last week, I was reminded of Hurricane Harvey and the Cajun Navy with inspiring examples of humanity and kindness.

A community of people saved a 40-year conservation effort by rescuing almost 5,000 sea turtles from freezing to death in South Padre.

A GoFundMe that initially raised $100K to help house Austin’s homeless and bring supplies to those without any shelter or in desperate need. This weekend I saw the donations at $750K. From one of their volunteer drivers:

"I've been going non-stop… first locating unhoused during the deadly nights and bringing them to hotels, then going home when I could to keep my generator going so my pipes wouldn't burst... On my way home last night, I was told to deliver groceries to a family of five. Seeing their joy was my favorite moment so far of the week. I needed that!"

This guy helped over 150 cars get off the road during the heinous weather.

No one can excuse the tragic loss of life from young children to the elderly.

The last 12 months have tested us in so many ways – COVID, social unrest, insurrections, and a 75-year winter freeze. And although we are all still looking to get our bearings, we will survive. Together.

Please Consider Donating
