How can we make sure we lose?

The effectiveness of sociocracy within an organization can diminish if the principles and practices are not consistently and actively applied.

Sociocracy is a governance and decision-making system that relies on ongoing engagement, learning, and practice.

If an organization does not consistently implement sociocratic principles, there is a risk of losing the benefits associated with this approach.

Here are some reasons why sociocracy abilities might diminish without regular practice:

Cultural Shift:

Sociocracy often involves a cultural shift within an organization, moving away from traditional hierarchical structures toward more collaborative and inclusive practices. If the organization does not consistently reinforce and practice sociocratic principles, there's a risk of reverting to previous hierarchical behaviors.

Skill Erosion:

Sociocracy requires individuals to develop specific skills, such as effective communication, active listening, and consent-based decision-making. If these skills are not regularly practiced and reinforced, individuals may lose their proficiency, and the organization may struggle to implement sociocratic processes effectively.

Lack of Consistent Implementation:

Sociocracy relies on consistent and structured implementation of its principles. If the organization intermittently applies sociocracy or only adopts certain aspects of it without a holistic approach, the intended benefits may not be fully realized, and the organization may not experience the desired positive impact.

Resistance and Reversion:

If there is resistance to sociocracy or a lack of commitment from key stakeholders, the organization may revert to more traditional decision-making structures and practices. Resistance or a lack of buy-in can undermine the sustainability of sociocratic principles.

Limited Training and Education:

Ongoing training and education are crucial for maintaining sociocratic abilities. If an organization neglects the development of its members' understanding and skills related to sociocracy, there is a risk that individuals will not be equipped to implement and sustain sociocratic practices.

Organizational Change:

If an organization undergoes significant changes, such as leadership turnover or shifts in strategy, there may be a tendency to prioritize other aspects of the change process over the consistent application of sociocratic principles. This can contribute to a loss of sociocracy abilities.

To maintain and strengthen sociocracy abilities, organizations should prioritize ongoing education, training, and the continuous application of sociocratic principles.

Regular reflection, evaluation, and adjustments are also essential to ensure that sociocracy becomes ingrained in the organization's culture and operations.

Without a sustained commitment to practice, there is a risk that the intended benefits of sociocracy may diminish over time.

Ceacillea, thank you for your comment. It's very consistent. I know what you are talking about from my real life experiences. The statement from your communication training EmPathIQ: "How to kill a relationship" is also very triggering. I enjoy reading your comments. I'm pondering on your last question "How to catch that upfront?". You inspired me to give an answer in the book I'm going to write about real life sociocracy. I already have the title and some topics to approach there. In case you want to share something important on my book, just tell me. I will give you credit. This is also valid for other people who practice sociocracy worldwide, as long as he takes responsibility for what he says and I believe that that content would be useful for readers in their endeavor to practice sociocracy. Those who are interested can consider this as an invitation to contribute, but not a promise that they will be quoted. It's obvious that I won't accept everyone. There will be a selection process in my consciousness. Timing is important. "Vivid relationships" have priority. Probably not many people will crowd, but who knows ... ?? (Adrian Zarif Sociocracy)

The title alone made me giggle. Like i have a similar one that i use in my communication training EmPathIQ: "How to kill a relationship". It makes more clear what we are not aware of. We mostly wonder: Why doesn't this work? We stay stuck in our lethargic unhappiness! To 'flip it over' as the actual things we do or have done to undermine it makes so much sense. Sociocracy has the main downside when changes are made top-down, even collaborating with other companies seems to have been decided by the top only. And when new people come in they feel they are 'forced' regardless this 'so-called collaborative' system. When feeling the force, the breaks go up for any wo/man, any age! How to catch that upfront?
