Having just finished reading Clayton Christensen's enlightening book, "How Will You Measure Your Life?," I am astounded by the profound simplicity it brings to the complexities that we give to our existence. Christensen's insights have illuminated the path to a life of purpose and fulfillment, emphasizing the transformative power of intentional choices in both personal and professional spheres. I felt I was inspired to continue my journey of intentional living, guided by the principles of meaning, compassion, and strategic foresight.
Learning from Others' Experience
As I delve into its pages, I did not only absorb Christensen's profound insights but also draw parallels to other influential works that have shaped my perspective. Through Christensen's lens, I recognize the importance of learning from the experiences of others. Often times, all we need in the process of decision making is paying attention to what theory states and apply critical thinking to our own problems: "Good theory can help us categorize, explain, and, most important, predict".
Finding Meaning as a Internal Motivator
Christensen's exploration of finding meaning and purpose as primary motivators resonates deeply with me. As I reflect on his teachings, I am reminded of the importance of aligning my actions with my core values and aspirations.

"Motivation is much less about external prodding or stimulation, and much more about what's inside of you, and inside of your work".
He discusses Herzberg's theory of motivation, which distinguishes between motivators and hygiene factors in the workplace. Motivators, such as challenging work, recognition, responsibility, and personal growth, are intrinsic to the job itself and deeply satisfy individuals. On the other hand, hygiene factors, like salary and office perks, only provide temporary satisfaction and don't lead to lasting happiness. The text emphasizes the importance of focusing on meaningful work and personal development, rather than tangible aspects of success, to find true motivation and fulfillment in one's job. It warns against the trap of chasing external rewards and suggests asking meaningful questions about work satisfaction to guide career decisions. Additionally, it highlights the risk of failure when decisions are based solely on initial projections without thorough testing and thoughtful consideration. By aligning my actions with my values and aspirations, I aspire to transcend conventional boundaries and pursue a life defined by meaning and impact.
Creating Good Relations in Your Personal Life
Christensen's also talks about creating meaningful connections and guiding us toward nurturing and cherishing relationships that enrich our life. We should all aspire to leave a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and positive change. Moreover, Christensen's theory about having a strategy for a career while being open to new opportunities resonates deeply with me. Having more and more conversations with people at the beginning of their careers, I recognize the importance of setting clear goals and objectives, yet remaining flexible and adaptable to unforeseen circumstances. Christensen's insights underscore the dynamic nature of career development, emphasizing the need to strike a balance between strategic planning and embracing serendipitous opportunities.
Let us embrace the transformative power of intentional choices, both in our personal relationships and professional endeavors. How intentional are we in our day-to-day lives, and how can we align our actions with our values and aspirations to lead lives of purpose and impact? These are questions worth pondering as we continue our journey of intentional living.
