How can we change the world with Design? Let's begin with scientists

How can we ease the life of scientists & researchers?

Scientists, researchers, and academics are the unsung heroes behind countless advancements that shape our lives. From groundbreaking medical discoveries to innovative technological solutions, their work has a profound impact on our world.

So, as designers, if we aim to change the world for the better, the answer lies in how we improve quality of research, around the globe. And this is closely intertwined with how do we make the life of scientists & academicians easier when it comes to conducting deep research with minimum roadblocks.

What are the key pain points in the life of a researcher?

The life of a researcher is rife with obstacles. From getting the right funding to collaborating with the right peers, access to improved infrastructure - research facilities, is crucial for conducting high quality research. In the past few decades, the life of a researcher has transitioned from rummaging through tons of books & research papers in a library to rummaging through millions of research papers online.

While this transition - from physical to digital may have eased the lives of many - but the online experience of academic research & publication has not been an easy one.

The end the woes of millions of its users, Springer Nature, world's largest digital platform for academicians & researchers, approached NetBramha, to craft seamless, hassle-free digital experiences that improved the quality of research worldwide.

Our collaboration with world's leading academic publishing platform

Springer Nature, a leading academic publisher with over 180 years of experience, supports millions of researchers annually, including 200+ Nobel laureates and thousands of prominent scientists and innovators. They sought our expertise in design thinking and user experience design to enhance their product, Nature Navigator - across web & mobile.

The objective was to optimize how groundbreaking research is curated and presented, facilitating accelerated scientific discoveries that address global challenges.

Unearthing pain points of researchers

We kickstarted this venture by conducting deep user research across the users of Springer Nature - who were basically seasoned scientists & researchers - looking for a better, easier way to navigate through complex research modules.

Along with this, we also exposed key pain points that exist across this ecosystem, that have a direct impact on quality of research conducted worldwide.

  • Limited access to information

70% of researchers have tried and failed to reproduce another scientist's experiments. More than 50% have failed to reproduce their own experiments.

  • Incomplete or Biased Analysis

Without access to all relevant data, researchers may inadvertently introduce bias into their analysis.

  • Reduced Accuracy

Errors in analysis, resulting in inaccurate/ misleading conclusions

  • Time-Consuming

Data searching constitutes 80% of time taken for research

  • Frustration and Stress

1/3rd researchers globally report high levels of stress due to poor data management process

Pain points related to questions around credibility of research, the overwhelming number of online articles to be perused, scattered information, a severe paucity of a centralized hub for all authentic research papers were hindering academicians conduct quality research.

Design Thinking in the context of research papers & academicians

Design Principles for a Better Research Experience

Our goal for Springer Nature: Nature Navigator was to create a one-stop destination for all academic research needs - from authentic research papers published to scope of networking with peers to ease of navigation, thus reducing the stress & time taken by researchers conduct deep, quality research.

The design principles, aka, the guiding principles for the redesign included

Evoking curiosity - Researchers are nothing if not curious

Engaging - Keeping them engaged on the platform

Enhancing discoverability - Making right research easily accessible

Warm & Friendly tone - Moving away from impersonal, robotic monotone

Instant gratification - Giving users the delight that comes from swift results

Simplicity - Reducing complexities & hassle associated with academic research
