How Can We Better Estimate the Dairy Goat Population in Indonesia?

The dairy goat industry in Indonesia is a growing yet under-recognized sector that holds significant potential for smallholder farmers and the country’s food security. However, one of the biggest challenges this industry faces is the lack of accurate data on the dairy goat population. Unlike meat goats, which are tracked due to their cultural and economic roles, dairy goats are often left out of national livestock statistics. This absence of data hinders the development of effective agricultural policies, limits access to resources, and slows down industry growth.

How can we address this gap? What methods could we use to better estimate the number of dairy goats in Indonesia?

One approach could involve using existing livestock data from the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), which currently tracks general goat populations. While this data doesn’t distinguish between meat and dairy goats, we might be able to estimate the dairy goat population by analyzing trends, practices, and market demand. However, this could only provide a rough approximation. Would this method be enough, or should we consider more direct approaches?

For instance, conducting targeted surveys of farmers and cooperatives could offer clearer insights into herd sizes and milk production. By gathering information directly from the source, we could capture more detailed data on dairy goats. But how would we ensure that these surveys are widespread enough to provide accurate national estimates? Should the government take the lead, or could local farming communities play a bigger role?

Another idea is to use milk production data as a proxy for estimating goat numbers. By comparing total production in specific regions with the average milk yield per goat, we could reverse-engineer an estimate of the population. Would this approach be practical, or are there too many barriers to gathering reliable production data in rural areas?

What do you think are the most effective ways to estimate the dairy goat population in Indonesia? How can we overcome the challenges of data collection in this sector? Your ideas and suggestions could be key to unlocking new opportunities for dairy goat farmers and improving Indonesia’s food security.
