How can we assess the credibility of 3d visualizations?

It was a pleasure to speak at the Visual Resource Stewardship Conference https://vrconference.evs.anl.gov/ in Chicago a few weeks back. The quality of both the program and delegates makes this a must attend conference for anyone working on the assessment and protection of visual resources.

One of the reoccurring themes I heard across the 3 days was, from an industry standpoint, how can we provide confidence that the visual simulations submitted as part of an EIA or Outreach Program faithfully depicted how the proposed development would look in the landscape?

Carrying out a simple post construction analysis (pictured above) was discussed as a way to authenticate the accuracy of a visualization. I am a great believer that it should be incumbent upon the creator of any visualization to “ground-truth” their work through post construction analysis, when practical – it’s good for the practitioner and its good for the industry, even though it is a retrospective view.

The bigger discussion remains though, and this relates to visualizations that are submitted to specifically assist with the permitting and consenting of large-scale capital projects and the fact that there is currently NO requirement to provide supporting information that will enable the viewer to gauge the accuracy or field of view represented, and therefore what relevance can be placed on the visualization ….but that’s a story for another day
