How Can the U.S. Boost College Completion, Especially for Poor Students?
The new school year has begun and high school seniors across the country are diving into the daunting college application process. Applying to college is more common than it used to be, particularly for low-income students. Today, around 62 percent of low-income students attend college in the fall after graduating from high school — a 15 point increase since 2000.
Unfortunately, however, this increase in enrollment has not been matched by an increase in academic preparedness. At public four-year colleges, for example, more than half of low-income students are assigned to remedial classes due to inadequate preparation, and such students are far less likely to complete a college degree.
What can schools do to counter this shameful trend? In a new column for Huffington Post, I share how we have designed every aspect of the Success Academy model working backwards from the goal of four-year college readiness and completion. I invite you to read the column and share your thoughts here!
Experience doesn't substitute,
7 年Once I thought how to build up the students like in Bangladesh. Also some of my known persons requested me to build up some students as like as me. I tried from 1984 to 2000 but experience says the teachers are dead against this inspiration. I have the great respect some of the world teachers as like as Mohatma Gandhi & Scholar Nehru who thought for new India as s secular country. Now we can see what is happening in India! What is happening in Abraham Linkon's country as like as USA! They didn't leave like they are! So, I have consolation to see as like as Nepolion. Although I claim some teachers are dead against to create the new peace & happy world to discover the a little part of the universe. So what I have great respect to Martin Luther King, to poet Byron. Sorry I can not arrange my writing suddenly without a realistic program/programme. Alas I can not leave any disciple like Aristotle, like the theme of Jean Jack Rousseau except to see you. I love you, I love the people of the world

7 年Why would we want to "boost" college completion? That just waters down the value of college degrees even further.

7 年Eva, while you're doing great work and the program sounds promising, at this point you've created a very clever marketing tool directed at less than 13% of the population. Unfortunately, you've likely made very little impact on the college completion rate.
